Hamburg, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Luca Toni scored twice to carry Italy over Ukraine, 3-0, Friday in the quarterfinals at FIFA World Cup Stadium Hamburg.
The Fiorentina forward notched two goals within 10 minutes to reserve Italy a spot in the semifinals. The team meets host Germany, which defeated Argentina 4-2 on penalty kicks, July 4 in Dortmund.
Italy's first effort on goal came in the 4th minute of the match. Argentine-born Mauro Camoranesi slid past the Ukranian defense and took a chance from 20 yards, but his shot went just wide of Shovkovskiy's net.
Moments later, Juventus defender Gianluca Zambrotta opened the scoring as he fired a left-footer from 25 yards out past Ukraine goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskiy to take the lead.
Ukraine's best chance of grabbing the equalizer in the first half came in the 32nd minute. Anatoliy Tymoschuk rifled from 30 yards out, but his effort went just wide to deny the World Cup debutant the goal.
Andriy Shevchenko, who was playing against some of his former AC Milan teammates including Andrea Pirlo and Alberto Gilardino, created his first scoring opportunity in the 41st minute. His left-foot shot from 25 yards out was deflected into the arms of Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.
Ukraine's offense started to come together in the second half. Andriy Gusin tested Buffon in the 49th minute as he sent a header into the back post which deflected off the woodwork and was eventually cleared out by the Italians
Ten minutes later, Italy, which knocked out Australia in the Round of 16, doubled its lead as Toni scored with a close-range header. Toni found teammate Francesco Totti's cross inside the box and put the ball out of Shovkovskiy's reach.
Toni then sealed the win in the 69th minute as he tapped in Zambrotta's pin- point cross to notch his second goal of the evening. With the victory, the Italians are unbeaten in their last 23 international matches.
Friday's match marked the fourth all-time encounter between the two countries. They met just last month in a friendly leading up to this tournament. The previous match resulted in a scoreless draw.
Italy, which is making its 16th World Cup appearance, captured the golden trophy in 1934, 1938 and 1982.
