Cologne, Germany (My Sportsbook) - World Cup debutant Ukraine advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time in history after winning 3-0 on penalty kicks against Switzerland on Monday in Cologne.
AC Milan striker Andriy Shevchenko missed the first penalty for Ukraine, but teammates Artem Milevskiy, Serhiy Rebrov and Oleg Gusev found the back of the net to secure the 3-0 win.
Switzerland, which did not concede a single goal in the tournament until the shootout, was once again sent home after the Round of 16. In their last World Cup appearance, the Swiss were knocked out of the second round after being defeated, 3-0 by Spain.
During regulation time, both teams created several scoring opportunities on goal, but could not break the deadlock
In the 20th minute, Shevchenko came close to opening the scoreboard for the Ukraine. The 29-year-old managed to get in front of Swiss defender Johan Djourou and receive Maksim Kalinichenko's free-kick, but hit the crossbar with a low header.
Minutes later, the excitement switched fields as Alexander Frei received a spot-kick. The Rennes striker fired at the bar and his effort was rebounded to Tranquillo Barnetta, who sent the ball just wide.
Ukraine's best chance of scoring in the second half came in the 59th minute. Shevchenko was awarded a free kick after Andriy Nesmachniy was taken down by Tranquillo Barnetta. Shevchenko rifled a shot from 22 yards out, but the ball deflected off the Swiss' wall for a corner.
In the 124th minute of overtime, Ukraine wasted another opportunity as Shevchenko's delayed pass found Rebrov, but the midfielder was confronted by Swiss defender Ludovic Magnin.
Marco Streller then tried to create some momentum on the opposite side of the pitch, but was tackled by a prowling Andriy Gusin outside the box.
After a scoreless second over-time, the two teams resorted to penalty kicks.
Shevchenko stepped up to the line first, but his low shot was blocked by Switzerland goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuehler.
Streller, Barnetta and Ricardo Cabanas then missed their three shots to earn Ukraine goalkeeper Oleksandr Shovkovskyi the shutout.
With the victory, the Ukraine meets Italy Friday in the quarterfinals in Hamburg.
