Cleveland, OH (My Sportsbook) - A.J. Allmendinger captured Sunday's Grand Prix of Cleveland at the Burke Lakefront Airport course. The No.7 Lola driver crossed the finish line 3.279 seconds ahead of Bruno Junqueira.
The victory was Allmendinger's second in a row and second of his Champ Car career.
After winning his first pole of the season Allmendinger led the 18-car field to the green flag for a scheduled 97 laps of tight racing.
As Allmendinger led the field into turn one the competitors drove side-by-side battling for position. The close racing proved to be a disaster for some key drivers as they entered the backstretch of turn one.
While dirt flew from drivers getting into the grass the leader spun out. But the big story occurred when Paul Tracy's car went airborne over two-time defending series champion Sebastien Bourdais. The bottom of Tracy's car made some contact with Bourdais' head during the crash.
Bourdais was conscious and moving as he was transported to a local hospital for further observation. He was later released from the hospital and is reported to be okay. Bourdais finished in last.
A total of seven drivers crashed during the wild start. For the next few laps the competitors in the crash took pit stops for repairs.
After the dust settled Oriol Servia found himself with the race lead. Justin Wilson, Will Power, Dan Clarke, and Nicky Pastorelli completed the top-five.
As Servia maintained his lead over Wilson for first, Tracy battled into the top-10. But more problems for Tracy came on lap 23 when Pastorelli spun him out trying to pass for eighth spot.
This brought out the caution flag allowing for pit stops to take place. Servia won the race off pit road but was in fifth due to some drivers not taking stops.
The first four positions belonged to Bruno Junqueira, Allmendinger, Mario Dominguez, and Tracy. All of these drivers were on different pit strategies after being involved in the lap-one crash.
On lap 27 as the leaders entered turn nine and ten an inside pass by Allmendinger gave him control of the race.
The next caution of the afternoon took place after a Tonis Kasemets incident. When pit stops got under way Alex Tagliani and Nelson Philippe decided not to pit and assumed the first and second spots, respectively. Wilson followed in third after winning the race of pit road.
On lap 43 Tracy's day came to a sudden end when he went slamming into the wall. He finished in a disappointing 16th place.
After the lap 48 restart Wilson dropped back to fifth when Allmendinger and Junqueira passed by him.
The next lead change took place on lap 56 when Nelson Philippe took the inside lane past Tagliani. But on the next lap Philippe and Tagliani took their pit stops handing the lead back over to Allmendinger.
After a lap 63 caution for Andrew Ranger some more pit stops took place. Allmendinger, Wilson, Servia, and Power took stops under the current caution period.
Junqueira and Clarke took first and second by not stopping. But on lap 72 they gave up their positions to come in for pit stops.
With the laps winding down the top-five now read: Philippe, Tagliani, Allmendinger, Wilson, and Servia. The top-two drivers still needed to make one more pit stop before the end of the race.
On lap 78 Philippe had electrical problems and drove onto the grass. Wilson, who was running in fourth, had a right-front suspension break and also drove off onto the grass. These two incidents brought out another caution flag.
The new leader, Tagliani, took his last pit stop on lap 80. This gave Allmendinger the race lead with Dominguez, Clarke, Junqueira, and Jan Heylen following behind.
The No.7 Lola driver quickly created a margin of over one second. As Allmendinger extended his lead it was decided the race would be shortened due to the two-hour limit.
During the last lap Clarke got by Dominguez for second spot. But Dominguez spun out after the pass and got into Clarke. Dominguez finished in sixth and Clarke finished in seventh.
After 95 laps Allmendinger crossed the finish line to win back-to-back races. Junqueira took second place due to the Clarke/Dominguez crash.
Servia, Tagliani, and Heylen completed the top-five.
The next race in the series is set for Sunday, July 9th at the Exhibition Place in Toronto.
