Hanover, Germany (My Sportsbook) - A nasty header from Philippe Senderos and a controversial goal by Alexander Frei earned Switzerland a 2-0 win over the Korea Republic Friday and a spot in the Round of 16. With the victory, Switzerland captured the first place spot in Group G with seven points and meets Group H's runner-up Ukraine Monday in Cologne. With the loss, the Korea Republic returns home with four points. Arsenal defender Senderos opened the scoring in the 24th minute as he sent a powerful header into the far right corner past goalkeeper Woon Jae. In the process, Senderos collided with defender Jin Cheul Choi and suffered a facial injury. Both players received treatment on the sidelines and eventually returned to play. With the strike, Korea has conceded the first goal in 18 of their previous 23 World Cup games. Heading into the second half, Korea stepped up their offense and came close to grabbing the equalizer. In the 65th minute, Choi got a head on a corner kick, but his effort was denied by Switzerland goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuehler. The Swiss then doubled their lead in the 77th minute as Frei received Xavier Margairaz's pass and raced into the box. The Rennes forward rounded Jae and tapped the ball into an empty net. During the play, the linesman's flag went up for offside, but referee Horacio Marcelo Elizondo insisted Margairaz's pass had come off a defender. The Korea Republic's Jin-Kyu Kim tried to avoid a shutout in the 83rd minute, but his shot was deflected on to the bar by Zuberbuhler. Also in Group G action on Friday: France defeated Togo, 2-0, to earn a spot in the second round. The European team will face Spain Tuesday in Hanover.
