Frankfurt, Germany (My Sportsbook) - After a six goal showing in its last match, Argentina was content with a 0-0 finish Wednesday to the Netherlands, just enough for the team to take the top spot in Group C.
Despite a number of opportunities, both teams, which have already qualified for the next round, finished group play with the scoreless draw.
The draw gives Argentina the first place spot, and a meeting with Mexico on Saturday, while the Netherlands face the first place team in Group D, Portugal on Sunday.
Argentina entered the field with a slightly different lineup than the one that scored six goals against Serbia & Montenegro in the team's second match of the group stages. Lionel Messi, making his first start of the World Cup, was one of the new additions.
Hernan Crespo and Javier Saviola were also absent from the starting lineup as well.
For the Netherlands, Mark Van Bommel, Giovanni Van Bronckhorst and Arjen Robben, among others were removed from the starting lineup.
Battling for the top spot in Group C, Argentina opened with an early attack, earning two corner kicks inside of the first six minutes. On the second one, Argentina managed to test Edwin Van Der Sar, when Juan Riquelme set piece landed right in the goalkeeper's hands.
In the 24th minute, Argentina's head coach Jose Pekerman made an early change to his lineup, bringing on Fabricio Coloccini for Nicolas Burdisso.
Still looking for the first goal of the match, Argentina continued to pressure, finding its best chance in the 30th minute, when Maxi Rodriguez' volley hit the post. The striker's shot hit the post to keep the match scoreless.
By the end of the half, both teams managed to create opportunities, but Argentina appeared to have the overall advantage, as the team found numerous chances on the Netherlands' side of the field.
In the second half, the Netherlands took quick control, but struggled to find a shot on goal.
Both teams continued to pose a threat with nearly equal ball control. By the end of 90 minutes, the teams had combined for six shots on goal, each with three. Argentina appeared to have more opportunities for the goal, with 10 corner kicks compared to the Netherlands' seven.
