Leipzig, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Angola's chances at advancing into the Round of 16 fell short Wednesday, as the team conceded its one goal lead to Iran late in the match to finish the tournament with a 1-1 draw.

Angola needed more than just its one goal to match Mexico's goal differential. Mexico lost 2-1 to Portugal in Wednesday afternoon's other match, allowing the team to advance to the next round in the second spot in Group D.

Flavio scored Angola's first goal of the tournament in the 60th minute, but Iran's Sohrab Bakhtiarizadeh found the equalizer 15 minutes later, nearly putting an end to the chances of life beyond the group stages.

Iran opened the match taking quick ball control to set the pace of the match. However, both teams were forced to make early substitutions due to injuries that occurred within 10 minutes of each other.

In the 13th minute, Iran head coach Branko Ivankovic was forced to go to the bench to replace the injured Mohammad Nosrati with Masoud Shojaei.

Then, in the 23rd, Angola was forced to go to its bench, replacing Mateus with Love.

Following the early substitutions, both teams settled into the match with equal ball control, however, it was Iran that managed the majority of the scoring opportunities. By the end of the first half, Iran had taken five shots on goal compared to Angola's three.

To open the first half, Angola came out strong, finding a great opportunity in the 46th minute. Mendonca jumped on a lose ball, trapped it on his chest and sent a shot to the goal that flew just wide of the net.

Angola continued to pressure before its lineup took another injury hit, when the team had to go to the bench to replace Akwa with Flavio in the 55th minute.

The substitute would pay off, as Flavio found Angola's first goal of the tournament in the 60th minute to bring the team a step closer to a possible advance past the group stages.

On the quick attack, Ze Kalanga received a great through ball pass allowing him to sprint down the right side to set up the attack. With the goal in sight, the midfielder sent a cross right into the center of the box where Flavio was waiting. Flavio then knocked the ball into the back of the net, scoring the first goal of the match.

But in the 75th minute, Angola's chances would take a great hit when Bakhtiarizadeh found the late equalizer to bring the teams even at a goal a piece.

Bakhtiarizadeh found the back of the net on a terrific set piece from Mehdi Mahdavikia. The defender headed in the equalizer past the diving hands of goalkeeper Pereira Joao Ricardo.

Angola attempted to regroup, but struggled to control the match, as a rejuvenated Iranian team continued to apply pressure to the defense.

Overall, both teams combined for 20 shots on goal, with Iran taking 13 of them.
