Dortmund, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Tranquillo Barnetta recorded a goal and an assist to carry Switzerland over Togo, 2-0, Monday in Dortmund.
The Rennes playmaker set up teammate Alexander Frei in the first half, before notching a goal of his own in the second.
In the 18th minute, Barnetta sent a pinpoint cross to Frei, who was just inside the box. Frei fired a header past Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa to give Switzerland the early lead.
Togo's offense, led by Kader Mohamed and Emmanuel Adebayor, created several scoring opportunities in the first half, but could not finish the job. In the 10th minute, Adebayor took advantage of a defensive blunder and raced into the box. The Arsenal forward found teammate Mohamed Kader, but his cross was too high for Kader to get a head on.
In the 35th minute, Adebayor was taken down by a Swiss defender in the box. Togo fans expected a penalty kick, but the referee would not make the call.
Switzerland came close to doubling its lead throughout the second half, but it wasn't until the 88th minute that Barnetta gave the team its insurance goal. The 21-year-old midfielder rifled a shot into the far post to seal the win and eliminate Togo from the World Cup.
The African nation, which suffered a 2-1 loss to Korea Republic in its opening match, needed a win to stay in Group G contention.
With the victory, Switzerland has four points and is tied for first place in Group G with Korea Republic.
Switzerland and Korea will battle for the top spot when they meet Friday in Hanover. Togo takes the field against France, which is trying to reserve a spot in the Round of 16, that same day in Cologne.
