Brooklyn, MI (My Sportsbook) - Johnny Benson, a Grand Rapids, MI native, captured Saturday afternoon's Con-way Freight 200 Craftsman Truck Series race at the Michigan International Speedway. The No.23 Toyota crossed the finish line 0.112 seconds ahead of Mark Martin.
The victory was the first of Benson's Craftsman Truck career.
Veteran Mike Skinner won the pole earlier in the day and brought the 36-truck field to the green flag to start 100 laps of close, high-speed racing.
The No.5 Toyota led the field through two early caution flags. During the lap 15 restart Martin drove past Bobby Labonte for the second spot. Labonte fell back to fourth when Terry Cook took over third.
As lap 20 approached Skinner and Martin battled side-by-side for the lead. For the next few laps they traded the first position. And on lap 26 Martin took the outside lane for the lead. By lap 33 Skinner drops to third as Labonte took over second.
The No.5 started to fall off the pace due to a windshield tearoff that got stuck on his grill and began to overheat his engine. Due to this problem he had to come into the pits earlier than planned, on lap 34.
On lap 36 debris on the race track brought out another caution. Under this caution Martin led the leaders onto pit road for the first pit stops of the afternoon.
Cook, who went into the pits in fourth, won the race off pit road and took over the race lead. Benson, Labonte, and Matt Crafton followed behind the leader.
During the lap 39 restart Labonte drove past Benson for second. And on the next lap Labonte went past Cook to take control of the race. As Cook started to fall back Martin began a run from fourth.
Martin set his sights on the lead after driving past Benson and Cook for second. Some wheel-to-wheel racing occurred on lap 47 between Labonte and Martin. As they crossed the start/finish line Martin took the inside lane to re-take first.
After 50 laps, the top-five read: Martin, Labonte, Benson, Crafton, and Ron Hornaday Jr.
The top-three drivers opened up a five-second margin over the rest of the field. But that lead vanished when the fourth caution came out on lap 67 for debris.
Under this caution the last pit stops of the afternoon took place. Labonte, who came into the pits in third, had a long stop. He came out of the pits 11th on the grid. Martin had a great stop and maintained his lead.
Benson, Jack Sprague, and Crafton followed Martin to the restart with 30 laps to go.
With only 28 laps remaining Benson took the inside lane to pass Martin for the first position. After the pass was complete the caution flag came out for a Timothy Peters crash.
Martin, Rick Crawford, Crafton, and Martin Truex Jr. followed Benson to the restart with 20 laps to go. The drivers only battled for four laps after the restart before the next caution came out for debris.
As soon as the race got restarted with 12 laps remaining the seventh caution flag came out for a Bobby East spin out.
Finally the race got back under way with only eight laps to go. During the restart Benson maintained his lead while Labonte drove past Crawford and Crafton for third. Todd Bodine also had a good restart and moved into the top- five.
With three laps to go Martin tried to make an outside pass for the lead but was unsuccessful. As this occurred a Truex Jr. and Kerry Earnhardt crash brought out the eighth and final caution to tie the track record.
This caution set up for an exciting green-white-checkered finish. On the restart Benson held onto his lead while Martin followed close behind. Martin couldn't pass Benson on the last lap and Benson celebrated his first Craftsman Truck Series victory.
Labonte, Bodine, and Crafton rounded out the top-five.
Bodine's fourth place finish coupled with his Germain Toyota teammate Ted Musgrave weak 23rd-place result gives Bodine a 178-point lead over David Reutimann (1,650-1,472). Musgrave fell one position to third with 1,469 points.
The next race in the truck series is set for Friday, June 23rd at The Milwaukee Mile.
