Cologne, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Pauleta scored in the fourth minute, and then Portugal held Angola scoreless for the remaining 86 minutes to finish Sunday's World Cup schedule with a 1-0 victory.
After just missing a shot minutes before, Pauleta and the Portugal offense stormed through the Angola defense to score the decisive goal early in the first half.
Portugal and Mexico, who defeated Iran, 3-1 both finished the first day of the Group D schedule win wins.
Portugal's offense surged early, with Pauleta narrowly missing a goal with his first shot in the opening minute. Pauleta knocked a low shot from the left side that rolled wide of the far post.
It didn't take long for the midfielder to strike again, however, as Pauleta scored the opening goal in the fourth minute to give Portugal the early lead. The midfielder received a great left-footed pass from Luis Figo and drilled a low shot to the back of the net to take the early lead.
The goal was Pauleta's 47th international score.
Angola tried to find the equalizer in the 24th, when Akwa attempted a bicycle kick that flew over the net.
The first half increasingly became physical, as referee Jorge Larrionda issued two cautions within two minutes of each other. Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo was cautioned in the 26th and Angola's Jamba was issued the yellow card in the 28th.
Portugal continued to press, nearly finding the second goal of the match in the 35th minute, when Ronaldo's diving header knocked the cross bar. Overall, Portugal took 11 shots, four of which were on goal inside of the first 45 minutes.
Portugal managed to continue to pressure the Angola defense and found one last chance at a two-goal lead before the half. Ronaldo knocked a shot from inside of the center of the penalty box that was saved and punched out by a diving Pereira Joao Ricardo in the 45th minute.
The half finished with Angolan defender Loco receiving a caution, the team's second of the match.
Portugal has a perfect 4-0-0 record when leading at the half, making the test even more difficult for the Angolan squad.
The second half started with much of the ball possession in favor of Portugal, who continued to pressure the Angola net. Pauleta managed two shots in the 56th and 57th minutes, the first missing wide of the far post, and the second saved by Ricardo, who extended to his left to make the save.
Two minutes later, Angola made its first substitution of the match, inserting Mantorras into the lineup for Akwa.
Portugal took Ronaldo out of the match in the 60th minute, replacing the striker with Costinha.
Angola threatened at times late in the second half, but couldn't manage to get past the strong Portugal defensive line. Overall, Angola managed two shots on goal compared to Portugal's seven.
Portugal was without midfielder Deco, who was ruled out of the starting lineup with a foot injury. The midfielder injured his left foot during Friday's training session.
Portugal and Angola have met twice prior to Sunday's match-up. In the last meeting, Portugal scored five goals for a 5-1 victory in 2001. The teams also met in 1989, with Portugal taking the first win, 6-0.
Portugal returns to the field June 17 to face Iran in Frankfurt, while Angola travels to Hanover to face Mexico on June 16.
