Leipzig, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Both teams entered with excellent records, one team left with a perfect World Cup record thus far, as Arjen Robben netted an 18th minute goal to give the Netherlands the 1-0 victory over Serbia & Montenegro on Sunday.
Despite six shots on goal from the Dutch, Robben's goal was the game-winner, giving the Netherlands a much needed first match win in Group C play.
The Netherlands dominated the first half, with the majority of the ball control and finding five shots on the Serbia net Serbia, in contrast, managed three shots on the Netherlands' goal.
Robben opened the scoring and jump started the Netherlands' offense with a low shot into the left corner of the Serbia net. Robben broke through the Serbia defense after receiving a great through ball from Robin Van Persie that sparked the breakaway. Robben's goal sparked cheers from the thousands of orange draped fans supporting the Netherlands at the Zentralstadion.
Serbia & Montenegro had to make early substitutions in the match. Ognjen Koroman was brought in to replace Nenad Djordjevic in the 43rd minute and entering the second half, Nikola Zigic came in for Savo Milosevic.
With two fresh faces, Serbia battled at the beginning of the second half, but failed to capitalize on any attacking opportunities. The team nearly capitalized on a Netherlands' mistake in the 59th minute, when a defender headed a ball towards his own net that soared over the cross bar and out of bounds.
But despite the near mistake, it was the Netherlands who continued to apply pressure, in search of a two goal lead.
The match increasingly became physical, as both teams looked for a goal. Overall, a total of six yellow cards were issued by referee Markus Merk.
Serbia made its final substitution in the 67th minute, when forward Danijel Ljuboja came in for Mateja Kezman.
Serbia managed its best attempt at scoring the equalizer in the 71st minute, when Dutch goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar made a great save on Koroman's second attempt. Following the save, the goalkeeper appeared injured, prompting the trainers to run out onto the field with a stretcher. However, Van der Sar appeared to be uninjured and remained in the match.
Prior to kick-off, Serbia & Montenegro midfielder Goran Gavrancic was inserted into the starting lineup to take over for midfielder Nemanja Vidic, who was ejected in the team's final qualifying match against Bosnia.
Sunday's match was the second Group C match of the weekend. On Saturday, Argentina defeated Cote d'Ivoire, 2-1 to open the group's schedule.
Both teams return to the field on June 16. The Netherlands travel to Stuttgart to face Cote d'Ivoire and Serbia & Montenegro faces Argentina in Gelsenkirchen.
