Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Portugal went undefeated in the qualifying tournament, and now hopes it can carry that momentum over to Germany for the 2006 World Cup.
The Portuguese fans have a lot to be excited about after its team finished with nine wins and three draws through 12 matches in the qualifying round. In fact, the squad's 35 goals led all of Europe during the competition.
This will be the fourth time that Portugal will be represented in the World Cup, the previous time coming in 2002 when it bowed out in the first round after a surprising defeat to Korea Republic in the final group outing.
If Luiz Felipe Scolari's side hopes to extend its trip in Germany, it must continue to get a huge contribution from Pauleta. The striker posted 11 goals during qualifying en route to passing Eusebio's Portuguese record of 41.
Figo should also supply the team with energy after returning from retirement to play in this illustrious tournament. He walked away from the international game following Euro 2004. But the skilled winger left open the possibility to return, an option he obviously explored before being named to Scolari's roster.
Figo was part of the 'Golden Generation' of Portuguese football, which was supposed to capture numerous major trophies. Despite some extensive success, Figo and Portugal were never able to live up to the lofty expectations. They did advance to the final of Euro 2004, the semifinals of Euro 2000 and the quarterfinals of Euro '96 during their run with the squad.
Now, Figo will have one last chance to win a major championship at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Portugal is in Group D with Mexico, Iran and Angola.
