Dover, DE (My Sportsbook) - Mark Martin captured Friday evening's AAA Insurance 200 Craftsman Truck Series race. The No.6 Ford driver crossed the finish line more than four seconds ahead of Carl Edwards.
The victory was Martin's third of the season and fourth of his truck career.
After a delay because of an earlier rain storm, the truck race got underway with pole winner David Reutimann bringing the field to the green flag. He led 15 laps before yielding the top spot to Bobby Hamilton Jr.
The other front row starter, Mike Bliss, also fell back at the start, before tucking in line in the sixth position.
Kyle Busch then took over the lead and attempted to break away from the rest of the leaders. But the winner of the truck race two weeks ago at Charlotte fell victim to some backmarkers and it allowed Bliss to close to Busch's rear bumper.
The two were slowly working their way through the field, but the slower traffic let the rest of the top-five move closer to the top pair.
Martin had worked his way to third and the other Roush Nextel Cup driver in the race, Edwards, had made his way up to fifth.
After a debris caution and subsequent pit stop, Busch maintained the lead, but Martin's efficient pit crew got him out in second place.
Busch slipped up the track in turn four and the veteran Martin took immediate advantage to take the lead before 80 of the scheduled 200 laps were complete.
Kraig Kinser crashed in turn three of lap 98 to bring out the third caution flag of the day just before the field reached the mid-point of the race.
Everybody took the opportunity to hit pit road for fuel and new rubber.
Martin's No.6 Ford crew made no other adjustments and he got out of his pit box with the lead.
The green flag came down on lap 104 to restart the race and Martin quickly gave up the lead to Busch. The veteran Nextel Cup driver settled in behind Busch knowing there was still a long way to go.
Busch built the lead to more than one second, the largest lead of the race, as they approached 80 laps remaining.
But the race turned just a couple of laps later when the race leader, Busch, was "black-flagged" for having one of his two hood pins not connected. The problem left Busch in 20th place after he came down pit road for repairs and out of contention for the win.
Martin inherited the lead with Bliss jumping up to second place and series points leader Todd Bodine in third place. The No.6 Ford built the lead to more than 1.3 seconds as they hit the 150-lap mark.
Martin was maintaining a one-second lead over Bliss, but Edwards was faster than both drivers as he charged into third place.
Kelly Sutton lost control and brought out caution number four with 42 laps remaining.
With another weather front moving in, the caution put some stress on crew chiefs as to their "end-game" strategy. Come in for fuel and tires now, losing track position, or stay out and hope that the weather ends the race earlier than expected.
It appeared that all the leaders pitted and hoped that the weather would hold off long enough to get in all 200 laps.
Reutimann took just two tires and grabbed the top spot from Martin.
Would the strategy work?
It took Martin just three-quarters of a lap to retake the lead from Reutimann on lap 165.
Martin used his four new tires to pull away from Reutimann and the margin was nearly one second with 25 laps remaining. The lead was 1.7 seconds with 16 laps to go.
While Martin was sitting comfortably in the lead, Reutimann, Bodine, Bliss and Edwards were all in a close battle for second through fifth.
Edwards found a way through the other three drivers, but with five laps to go he was four seconds behind Martin.
Only a mechanical problem or a caution flag could keep Martin from the victory.
Neither came and Martin took the easy victory.
Bodine, Bliss and Reutimann completed the top-five.
Bodine's third-place finish helped him expand his points lead to 76 over his Germain Toyota teammate Ted Musgrave.
The next race in the Craftsman Truck Series in set for Friday, June 9th at the Texas Motor Speedway.
