Anaheim, CA (My Sportsbook) - The playoff-bound Anaheim Angels will try to recover from a night of celebrating when they open a three-game set versus the
Seattle Mariners tonight at Edison Field.
On Thursday, Garret Anderson's three-run homer highlighted a four-run fifth inning and propelled Anaheim past the Texas Rangers, 10-5, and finally secured the Angels' first postseason berth since 1986. Tim Salmon and Scott Spiezio also homered for Anaheim, which snapped a four-game losing streak.
The Angels had dropped seven of their last nine overall entering Thursday's game and had been trying since Saturday to wrap up the final playoff spot in the American League. Anaheim, because of Oakland's AL West clinching win over Seattle, will face the four-time defending AL champion New York Yankees as the wild card in the opening round.
John Lackey (9-4), who has won four of his last five decisions, earned the win and allowed three runs on seven hits over five-plus innings. He also walked a batter and struck out four to help the Angels to their fourth postseason appearance in franchise history.
Seattle enters its final series of the season off a 5-3 loss to the Oakland A's, who secured the AL West title with the victory.
Mike Cameron finished 3-for-4 with a home run for Seattle, which had its playoff hopes dashed earlier in the day with Anaheim's win and saw its four- game winning streak come to an end.
Joel Pineiro started for Seattle and scattered five hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
The Angels put the ball in the hands of Jarrod Washburn, who is coming off a loss to Seattle in his last start.
