Toronto, Ontario (My Sportsbook) - The red hot
Toronto Blue Jays will shoot for their fifth straight victory this evening when they open up the final weekend of the season against the
Detroit Tigers at SkyDome.
Toronto has ripped off four straight victories and six of its last eight overall. The Blue Jays have locked up third place in the AL East, 25 1/2 games behind New York.
On Thursday, the Blue Jays registered a 5-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles to complete a sweep. Esteban Loaiza tossed his team-leading third complete game of the season and the ninth of his career to pace the Blue Jays to the win.
Loaiza (9-10) yielded just one run on five hits and one walk after entering the game with three defeats in his last four starts. The Mexican hurler also posted three strikeouts.
Carlos Delgado homered and finished with two hits and two RBI for the Blue Jays. Chris Woodward and Jacob Cruz added a pair of hits apiece for Toronto as well.
Detroit will be happy to see this season come to an end, as it has dropped 27 of its last 33 contests overall. The Tigers dropped a 7-2 decision to Kansas City on Thursday.
Nate Cornejo (1-5) absorbed the loss for Detroit, which has lost seven of its last eight. Cornejo was charged with four runs -- one earned -- over six innings of work. He allowed four hits and walked four while striking out none.
Andres Torres was the lone Tiger to register multiple hits in the contest with two. Omar Infante, Eric Munson and Damion Easley added a hit in the losing effort.
The Tigers will pin their hopes on rookie lefthander Andy Van Hekken this evening. Van Hekken has lost back-to-back starts, including a loss to New York last week. The southpaw surrendered nine hits and three runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 innings versus the Yankees. He didn't permit a walk or strike anyone out in the contest.
Van Hekken will be facing the Blue Jays for the first time this season. This will be just his second road start, as he didn't figure in a decision in his other outing.
Toronto will answer with righthander Pete Walker on the hill. Walker has split his last four decisions, including a loss to Tampa Bay last week. The righthander was tagged for eight hits and four runs over 7 1/3 frames, while walking and fanning two in the defeat.
Walker will be toeing the rubber against the Tigers for the first time in his career. The righty has been decent at home this year, going 5-3 with a 5.18 ERA.
Toronto has swept all three meetings between these teams this year. The Blue Jays have dominated the Tigers over the last four seasons, going 26-7 against them, including 12-3 at SkyDome.
