Martinsville, VA (My Sportsbook) - David Starr captured Saturday afternoon's Kroger 250 at the Martinsville Speedway short track. The No.11 Toyota took the checkered flag six lengths ahead of Ted Musgrave.
The victory was Starr's first of the season and fourth of his Craftsman Truck Series career.
"I can't believe I'm in Victory Lane at Martinsville, this is awesome," said Starr.
Bobby Hamilton Jr. brought the 36-truck field to the green flag for 250 laps of racing. Right behind him was Mark Martin, winner of two of the first three events. But Martin immediately went in the opposite direction letting Clint Bowyer pass him for second place in the race's first 10 laps.
Following a caution flag, on lap 19 Bowyer ducked underneath Hamilton Jr. for the first lead change of the afternoon. He quickly extended his lead to more than two seconds. The margin was over three seconds after the first 50 laps.
A Steve Park spin brought out another checkered flag and the teams began to play differing strategies.
Bowyer stayed on the track while the second and third-place trucks, Hamilton Jr. and Martin pitted for fuel, tires and adjustments. Martin and Hamilton Jr. came out seventh and eighth, respectively, the first of the cars on the alternate strategy.
On lap 103 after a Boston Reid spin, two of the six leaders made their initial stops giving the lead of the race to Dennis Setzer.
Despite being on old tires, Setzer set his fastest lap of the day on lap 119 and continued to hold off Martin and Hamilton Jr.
When Dave Blaney spun on lap 120, Martin and Bodine both ducked onto pit lane for what would be their final stops of the day. The two points leaders restarted 25th and 26th, but all the trucks in front of them still had to make a pit stop before reaching the checkered flag.
If all went according to plan, Martin and Bodine would end up with the lead and battle each other for the win for the fourth consecutive race.
But David Starr and Ted Musgrave had other ideas and were planning on going all the way from lap 65 to the finish without stopping.
Martin re-entered the top-10 with 90 laps to go, but could he get through traffic and overtake Starr?
Martin's No.6 worked his way past Mike Bliss for fifth place with 54 laps remaining but the overwhelming number of caution flags was slowing his progress towards the front.
Martin ran into trouble trying to get past David Reutimann, but a smack on the rear bumper gave Martin fourth place with 35 laps to go.
However, the two Toyota were getting away with clear track in front of them.
Another spin and 15th caution flag brought the leaders back to the field for the final 29-lap run to the finish.
The green flag dropped and Martin challenged Crafton for third place.
Setzer spun Reutimann around with 14 laps to go bringing out a record 16th caution flag and setting up a eight-lap race to the checkered flag between Starr and Musgrave.
Starr got more than a truck length on Musgrave during the restart and quickly pulled away to a six-length lead. There were no more caution flags and Starr cruised to the victory.
"They could have given me 100 restarts and I couldn't have caught Starr," said Musgrave.
Matt Crafton, Martin and Bliss completed the top-five.
The next event in the series is set for Saturday, April 29th at the Gateway International Raceway.
