Hampton, GA (My Sportsbook) - Todd Bodine captured Friday night's John Deere 200 Craftsman Truck Series race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. The No.30 Germain Toyota crossed the finish line six lengths ahead of runner-up Mark Martin.
The victory was Bodine's first of the season and eighth of his truck career.
Bodine brought the field to the green flag to start the race after winning his first career truck pole.
But right from the start Martin, winner of the first two Craftsman Truck Series events, was on the move from his 10th-place on the grid. By lap 10 he had already climbed to third place behind Bodine and Mike Skinner.
Despite calls from his pits to "take it easy on the truck" Martin kept charging and five laps later the No.6 Scott's Ford took the lead for the first time.
He was still building his lead, passing backmarkers, when Scott Lagasse Jr. blew a tire on lap 32 bringing out the first caution.
A great pit stop from the No.30 Germain Toyota crew got him out in front of the Martin truck.
Two laps after the green flag, Martin took the lead once again, although Bodine moved aside so as not to use up his tires too early in the race. Bodine settled in behind Martin and the two quickly put some space between themselves and the rest on the field.
After 50 laps, the gap between the top two and third-place David Reutimann was more than four seconds.
The two leaders traded the lead back and forth "testing" each other for later in the race.
Two possible challengers were eliminated when Joey Miller (running fifth at the time) crashed and Mike Skinner couldn't slow down fast enough to avoid the lapped car of Lagasse Jr.
On the caution pit stop, Martin got out first, but Bodine's crew struggled and he came back on track in seventh place.
Bodine worked his way back through the field and on lap 77 was looking at Martin's rear bumper once again. With 44 laps to go, Bodine passed Martin for the lead, but again Martin refused to run in second place and retook the lead half a lap later.
Robert Richardson crashed with 37 laps remaining to bring out a caution and allow all the drivers to take enough fuel to reach the checkered flag.
Again, Bodine's pit crew had problems with the left-rear tire and he left pit road in sixth place.
And just like the previous time, Bodine quickly moved past Ted Musgrave and David Reutimann towards the leaders. Bodine passed underneath Jon Wood for second place with 27 laps to go.
On the next lap, Bodine took a peek underneath Martin, but didn't make the move.
Did Bodine have anything left? Had Martin showed everything or did he have more left underneath the hood of the No.6 Roush Ford?
The two drivers separated themselves from third-place Jon Wood and for the third consecutive race the two would battle for the win.
With 15 miles to go, Martin pulled out to a 1.7-second margin but there was lapped traffic ahead which could allow Bodine to close the gap.
Traffic did block Martin in with seven laps to go and Bodine had his chance. On lap 125 they went four wide, Bodine and Martin sandwiching Boston Reid as they went around him on both sides.
The No.30 Toyota never took his foot off the accelerator and he came out of the pack with the lead.
A caution flag left the drivers with another green-white-checker finish.
On the green flag, Martin went immediately to the bottom and pulled even with Bodine. They were side-by-side along the backstretch and Bodine's nose was slightly ahead as they saw the white flag signifying one lap to go.
Bodine never let up as they headed into turn 1 and he grabbed a one-length lead.
As Martin was about to duck to the bottom of the track, third-place Johnny Benson tried to make a move on Martin for second. He got a nose in front, but Martin fought him off.
However, in the meantime, Bodine had pulled out a six-length lead and any hopes of a third-straight win for Martin were over.
Bodine took the checkered flag and the victory.
The next race in the series is scheduled for Saturday, April 1st at the Martinsville Speedway.
