Delaware fires Henderson as men's basketball coach

NEWARK, Del. (AP) -Delaware fired coach David Henderson, a week after the Blue Hens concluded their third straight losing season.

Henderson, a former player and assistant coach at Duke, finished with a record of 85-93 in six seasons at Delaware. The Hens went 9-21 this past season, giving the program back-to-back 20-loss seasons for the first time in its history. Delaware was 20-41 overall over the last two seasons, including an 11-25 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Delaware athletic Edgar Johnson also pointed to waning interest in the program. The Hens' home attendance average went from 4,848 per game in Henderson's first year to 3,359 this past season. That was the school's lowest home average since the 1994-95 season.

The 41-year-old Henderson, who had two years remaining on a five-year contract, served as an assistant to Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski from 1997-2000. He was hired by Delaware in July 2000, shortly after Mike Brey, another former Duke assistant, left to become the head coach at Notre Dame.
