Lisbon, Portugal (My Sportsbook) - Winger Laurent Robert has agreed to a three-and-a-half year contract with SuperLiga club Benfica on Wednesday. Robert comes to Portugal from the English Premier League, where he was a member of Newcastle, but was playing on loan with Portsmouth. The 30-year- old ventured to England after a stint with PSG during the 2001-02 season in Ligue 1. With nine French caps, Robert made 17 appearances for Portsmouth during the loan. Since the opening of the transfer window, Benfica has also signed a new goalkeeper, Moretto, and an additional winger, Marco Ferreira. The former SuperLiga champions face Liverpool in the last 16 of UEFA Champions League in February. The club meets Pacos Ferreira in its next league match on Sunday. Benfica is in third place with 31 points, six behind leading Porto.
