Toronto Blue Jays will attempt to complete a sweep this evening when they close out their three-game set with the
Baltimore Orioles at SkyDome.
Toronto has won three in a row and five of its last seven overall. The Blue Jays have cemented a third place finish in the American League East, sitting 26 games behind New York.
On Wednesday, the Blue Jays posted a 3-2 win over the Orioles. Mark Hendrickson allowed no earned runs over seven innings to pace Toronto to the victory. In his fourth big league start, Hendrickson (3-0) scattered five hits to earn his third straight win.
The 6-9 lefthander, a former NBA player, permitted one unearned run, walked two and struck out three for the Blue Jays, who have won 12 of their last 16 games.
Vernon Wells delivered two hits, including a solo homer, for the Blue Jays. Wells homered in the fifth inning to become the youngest player in Toronto history to drive in 100 runs.
Carlos Delgado extended his hitting streak to seven games. In the third, he reached 100 walks for the third straight season. Toronto outfielder Shannon Stewart has reached base safely in 35 of 37 games after a single in the seventh.
Marty Cordova and Jerry Hairston Jr. each finished with two hits for the Orioles, who lost their eighth straight game and have just four victories in their last 32 games.
Rodrigo Lopez (15-9) suffered his second straight loss and fourth in his last five decisions. In seven innings of work, he allowed three runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out seven. Lopez is 0-3 against the Blue Jays this season.
Orioles shortstop Mike Bordick extended his record errorless streak to 106 games.
The Orioles will send veteran righthander Pat Hentgen to the hill this evening. Hentgen has been struggling since returning from a year's worth of rehab following Tommy John surgery. The veteran twirler has lost all three of his outings, including a defeat to Boston last week. Hentgen was tagged for four hits and four runs over six innings against the Red Sox.
The veteran will be toeing the rubber against the Blue Jays for the first time in his career. Hentgen will be making just his second road start of the year.
Toronto will reply by handing the ball to Esteban Loaiza this evening. Loaiza has lost three of his last four starts, including a defeat at the hands of Tampa Bay last week. The Mexican hurler was hammered for seven hits and nine runs over just 2 1/3 innings, while walking three and fanning two.
Loaiza has been decent against the Orioles this year, going 1-0 with a 3.95 ERA. For his career, Loaiza is 4-4 with a 4.61 ERA versus Baltimore.
Loaiza has been decent at home this year, going 4-4 with a 5.33 ERA in 13 contests.
Toronto has dominated this series in 2002, winning 14-of-18 meetings. The Blue Jays are 26-11 against the Orioles in the last two seasons.
Toronto is 38-39 at home and 40-35 versus the East, while the Orioles are 33-47 on the road and 26-46 within the division.
