Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Two teams searching for their first win of the season faceoff tonight when the
Colorado Avalanche host the
Boston Bruins at the Pepsi Center.
The Avs kicked off their season on Wednesday and skated to a 1-1 tie with the Dallas Stars.
Radim Vrbata scored with just under 13 minutes left in the contest to knot the game. Dallas' Mike Modano attempted to clear the puck at the blue line, but was stripped by Peter Forsberg, who pulled the puck around the Stars' center before cutting to the net. Instead of shooting, however, Forsberg looped behind the cage and missed a wide-open net with a stuff attempt.
Dallas netminder Marty Turco dove late across the crease on Forsberg's shot, and was out of position to stop Vrbata's point-blank rebound attempt out of a jam in front.
Rob Blake had a chance in the extra session but was stoned by Turco on a slapper from the top of the circles.
Patrick Roy, who is four games shy of Terry Sawchuk's all-time record of 971 games played, turned away 24 of Dallas' 25 shots, including several blistering shots by Scott Young in the overtime.
Joe Sakic and Forsberg each picked up an assist on the goal for the Avs. Forsberg, playing in his first regular-season game since the 2000-2001 season, looked dominant during his 25-plus minutes of ice time. The center sat out all of the 2001-2002 regular season with an assortment of injuries before returning to tally 27 points in 20 playoff games.
The Bruins opened their season on Friday and were dismantled by the Minnesota Wild, 5-1. Mike Knuble scored the only goal for Boston, which finished first in the East last season before losing to Montreal in the first round of the playoffs.
With Byron Dafoe no longer on the team, his replacement, John Grahame, allowed five goals on the 20 shots he faced.
Trailing by three, the Bruins got on the board 3:50 into the second period. Sean Brown made a centering pass to a tangled-up Knuble, who was able to slap the puck past Fernandez. The goal was the 17,000th in the Bruins' 79-year history.
The Bruins, who are in the midst of a six-game season-opening road trip, will return home on October 24 after visits to Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. . Colorado is unbeaten in the last six meetings (5-0-1) and have won the last three on its home ice and have outscored the Bruins 13-4 in the last two in Denver.
