Los Angeles, CA (My Sportsbook) - Former All-Star shortstop Nomar Garciaparra signed a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the New York Post had reported it to be a one-year contract worth between $6 and $8 million with a plate-appearance incentive. He is also expected to play first base, a position less likely to aggravate a severe groin injury suffered during the 2005 season. "Nomar adds a legitimate threat to the heart of our lineup and is a true competitor," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said when announcing the signing. "He's extremely athletic, versatile and mentally tough and he is a tremendous addition to the team." Garciaparra, 32, played only 62 games for the Chicago Cubs last year because of a left groin injury and hit .283 with nine homers and 30 runs batted in. He missed half of the 2004 season with various injuries. A long-time member of the Red Sox before being dealt to the Cubs in July 2004, Garciaparra spent eight-plus seasons in Boston and owns a career .320 batting average, 191 home runs and 740 RBI. The Georgia Tech product was named AL Rookie of the Year in 1997 and is a five-time All Star.
