Angels trade Josh Paul to Devil Rays

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Josh Paul, best known for rolling the ball back to the mound while the eventual winning run reached base for the Chicago White Sox in Game 2 in the AL championship series, was traded Monday by the Los Angeles Angels to Tampa Bay for minor league infielder Travis Schlichting.

The Devil Rays also announced they avoided arbitration with third baseman Sean Burroughs by agreeing to a $1.5 million, one-year contract that includes a $2.25 million club option for 2007.

Kelvim Escobar struck out Chicago's A.J. Pierzynski with two outs in the ninth inning of a 1-1 tie in Game 2 of the ALCS, but umpire Doug Eddings ruled Paul trapped the ball before rolling it back to the mound as Pierzynski took off for first.

Pinch runner Pablo Ozuna stole second and scored on a double by Joe Crede to give Chicago a 2-1 victory and tie the ALCS at one game apiece. The White Sox won the next three games to reach the World Series, where they swept the Houston Astros.

The 30-year-old Paul hit .189 with two homers and four RBIs in 34 games for the Angels last season. He was designated for assignment Dec. 9 to make room on the 40-man roster for newly acquired reliever J.C. Romero.

Paul has a career batting average of .251 in 228 games with eight homers and 56 RBIs. He also played for the White Sox from 1999-2003 and the Chicago Cubs in 2003.

The 21-year-old Schlichting spent last season at Single-A Southwest Michigan of the Midwest League, hitting .252 with three homers and 39 RBIs in 111 games.

The Devil Rays acquired the 25-year-old Burroughs from San Diego on Dec. 7 for right-hander Dewon Brazelton.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
