Phoenix, AZ (My Sportsbook) - The
Dallas Stars hope to remain unbeaten tonight when they visit Phoenix tonight in the Coyotes' home opener at America West Arena.
After skating to a 1-1 tie with Colorado on Wednesday, the Stars posted a 4-2 home victory over Anaheim on Friday. Bill Guerin, the team's marquee free agent signing this summer, made a big splash in his home Stars debut, contributing two goals and two assists. He now has figured in all five goals Dallas has scored this season.
Mike Modano and Sergei Zubov added a goal and two assists apiece, while Marty Turco turned away 24 shots to pick up his first win of the post-Ed Belfour era in Big D. The Stars' effort also secured rookie head coach Dave Tippett his first win behind the Dallas bench.
Tippett, considered a special teams guru by most, had to be thrilled with his club's power-play performance. Dallas went 2-for-3 with the man-advantage, as Guerin and Zubov each converted.
Turco has been very solid between the pipes in his two starts, but Tippett said Friday he is considering going with backup Ron Tugnutt this evening as the club is playing in back-to-back games. The veteran was obtained from Columbus this summer to provide insurance for the third-year Turco.
Including tonight, Dallas plays six of its next eight matches on road ice. The Stars host Edmonton on Tuesday before heading North to Minnesota two nights later.
Phoenix, meanwhile, opened its campaign with a 4-1 road loss to Los Angeles on Wednesday night. Coyotes Managing Partner Wayne Gretzky had his No. 99 sweater retired by the Kings prior to the game, and his old club proceeded to put two goals on the board in each of the last two periods to secure the win.
Phoenix' Danny Markov scored in the closing minutes of the second period to draw the Coyotes within a goal, but that was as close as they could come. Goaltender Sean Burke was beaten four times on 33 shots.
Between the first and second periods tonight the Coyotes will honor head coach Bob Francis for winning the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year. The club will present him with a crystal trophy to commemorate the achievement.
After tonight the Coyotes embark on a five-game road trip that begins Monday in Columbus. The trek also includes stops in Ottawa, Toronto, Buffalo and Nashville.
Dallas went 3-2 against Phoenix last season and is 7-6-3 in the last 16 meetings overall. The road club is unbeaten in 12 of those 16 clashes, but the Stars have dropped two of their last three at America West.
