Sundin lifts Toronto to OT victory over Montreal

Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - Mats Sundin scored the game-winning goal in overtime, as the Toronto Maple Leafs edged the Montreal Canadiens, 4-3, at Air Canada Centre.

Sundin also had an assist in the contest, which gave him his 1,100th career point.

"Obviously milestones are nice, something to look back on later," Sundin said, "but we're in an important part of the season right now."

Jeff O'Neill registered a goal and an assist and Ed Belfour made 30 saves for Toronto, which snapped a two-game skid.

Belfour picked up his 446th victory, and is now just one back of Terry Sawchuk for second place on the all-time wins list.

Tomas Plekanec, Mike Ribeiro and Alexander Perezhogin all scored goals for the Canadiens, who tied the game late in regulation but wound up dropping their second straight after entering overtime a man down.

Goaltender Jose Theodore made 33 saves in defeat.

With his team trailing 3-2 late in the third period, Plekanec lit the lamp at the 15:11 mark to pull Montreal even with Toronto and send the game into the extra session. The center took a pass from Michael Ryder on an odd-man rush and released a shot from the right circle that beat Belfour high and left.

The Canadiens were whistled for a slashing infraction as time expired in regulation, however, and Toronto needed just 1:29 to capitalize.

Sundin received a pass from Tomas Kaberle in the right slot and then tried to send the puck in front, but it hit off a defenseman and came right back to him. The center captain poked it in from there to end the game.

"It was just frustration," said Montreal's Saku Koivu, who was in a heated discussion with the referees after the game. "We were down 2-0, came back a few times...but it's after the game now. There's nothing you can do about it."

Toronto dominated the first 20 minutes of action, outshooting the Canadiens 16-7, to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.

Jason Allison got the Leafs on the board first, punching in a Nik Antropov rebound from the crease at the 5:35 mark.

Toronto forced a turnover and raced in on a 3-on-1 later in the frame to go up by two goals. Eric Lindros took a feed along the right wing and released a light shot from the circle that Theodore could not secure. The disc popped out into the slot for Chad Kilger, who tucked it in with 3:01 remaining.

Montreal bounced back with back-to-back goals to start the second.

Ribeiro made it 2-1 on a shot from the left circle that somehow found room between Belfour and the short-side post. The Canadiens evened the score midway through the stanza, as Andrei Markov's slapshot from the point deflected off the stick of Perezhogin and in with nine minutes to play.

Toronto, though, punched right back to reclaim the lead. Sundin entered the zone on a rush along the right wing and quickly sent the puck toward a streaking O'Neill, who redirected it past Theodore from the left slot to make it 3-2 Toronto.

Game Notes

The last six meetings between these two clubs have been decided by one goal...Sundin leads the Maple Leafs with 72 game-winning goals in his career...This was the middle test of a three-game road trip for Montreal. The Habs are 6-2-3 as the road team this season...The Maple Leafs are 9-4-1 on home ice this season...Staffan Kronvall left in the second period with a knee injury and will miss Toronto's upcoming three-game road trip.
