Columbus, OH (My Sportsbook) - David Aebischer made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season and Marek Svatos had a goal and two assists to lead the
Colorado Avalanche over the Columbus Blue Jackets, 5-0, at Nationwide Arena.
Andrew Brunette had a goal and an assist and Joe Sakic, Brad May, and Ian Laperriere each scored for the Avalanche, who stopped a three-game losing streak.
Pascal Leclaire made 27 saves and Sergei Fedorov had six shots but has yet to score a goal for the Blue Jackets, who have lost their last seven games.
The Avalanche drew first blood on the night at the 13:25 mark of the first period with a power play tally. Brunette brought the puck to the front of the net from the right boards but lost control. Svatos, however, picked up the loose puck and smacked it in for his 11th goal of the season.
Colorado got a late goal by Laperriere to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission. After Fedorov turned the puck over behind the net, Pierre Turgeon sent a centering pass to Laperriere and the forward skated to the right side and slid the puck past Leclaire's outstretched left pad with 33 seconds left.
The Blue Jackets put a lot of pressure on the Avalanche in the second period, outshooting Colorado 17-11, but they were unable to get any past Aebischer.
However, the Avalanche got another late goal in the stanza to take a 3-0 lead into the last period. Rob Blake threw a shot on net from high in the left slot. Leclaire made the save but the rebound went to Brunette and he poked it in with 24 seconds remaining.
Colorado scored two goals early in the third period to kill any chance of the Blue Jackets coming back. Svatos sent a pass from the left circle to May down low on the right side and he slammed it home 4:48 in. Then on a 2-on-1 play, Sakic received a pass from Milan Hejduk at the right circle and he shot the puck into the right corner of the net 1:15 later.
"The energy was there and the effort was there but there were a lot of breakdowns," said Columbus coach Gerard Gallant. "We probably made a mistake on three of those five goals. We made some mistakes and they put them in the back of the net."
