Buffalo, NY (My Sportsbook) - Martin Biron made 40 saves as the
Buffalo Sabres upended the
Montreal Canadiens, 3-1, in a Northeast Division battle at HSBC Arena.
Tim Connolly and Brian Campbell each had a goal and an assist and Ales Kotalik added the other goal for the Sabres, who have won two straight and five of their last six games.
"That's the most consistent effort from me all year," Biron said. "I played at the level I wanted it to be. There was no letdown. There was no part of the game I wasn't happy with."
Richard Zednik scored the only goal for the Canadiens, who have lost three out of their last four games. Yann Danis made 28 saves in the defeat.
"We played pretty good, we had shots on the net," Zednik said. "We have to get some goals. The goalie saw the shots, we have to play better in front of the net."
The Sabres got on the board at the 6:30 mark of the second period. Connolly saved a clearing attempt at the blue line and dumped the puck back in. Adam Mair picked it up behind the net and brought it out to the left boards. He then passed the puck across the goalmouth to Kotalik, who one-timed it into the net for his team-leading 12th goal of the season.
Buffalo would take a 2-0 lead into the last period on a goal by Campbell. Thomas Vanek passed from the high slot to Chris Drury at the right circle. He then passed it to Campbell down low in the left circle who fired it into the open net for a power-play tally at the 11:56 mark.
The Canadiens finally got on the board in the last session. Saku Koivu made a pass from the right circle to Andrei Markov at the left point. He brought his stick back like he was going to shoot, but instead sent a hard pass to Zednik who just redirected the puck in for his seventh goal of the season just 3:38 in.
Montreal got a spark from the score and turned up the heat on Buffalo to try and get the equalizer. However, Steve Begin was called for tripping with 3:34 left in the game and the Sabres made them pay for it just 32 seconds later.
Montreal had brought the puck into the Buffalo zone but was unable to get a shot off. Teppo Numminen got the puck to Connolly and he took it from his own zone and flew down the left side. He cut out to the slot, used a Buffalo player as a screen, and let fly with a wrist shot that went into the left corner of the net to make it a 3-1 game.
Montreal pulled its goalie with a little over a minute left to play in the game, but was unable to score.
