Lausanne, Switzerland (My Sportsbook) - The International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board announced Thursday that U.S. sprinter Jerome Young has been stripped of his gold medal from the 2000 Games in Sydney.
Young was a member of the gold-medal winning 4x400-meter relay team that featured Michael Johnson, Alvin Harrison, Antonio Pettigrew, Angelo Taylor and Calvin Harrison.
The world 400-meter champion, Young ran in the opening heat and semifinal round of the 1,600-meter race, but not the final.
However, it was later revealed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that Young had tested positive for steroids, which put the entire team's gold medal in jeopardy, despite the fact that none of the other members had a positive drug test.
The other three sprinters were eventually allowed to keep their medals and only Young was disqualified and ordered to return the gold to the IOC.
CAS had determined that Young committed a doping offense on June 26, 1999, although it was not found that he showed the presence of nandrolone metabolites until March 11, 2000.
Young was then suspended on April 3, 2000, but appealed the decision and was exonerated by the USA Track and Field Doping Appeals Board on July 10, 2000 after it was determined that a clean test taken only six days after the positive test raised "reasonable doubt." He then competed in the 2000 Summer Olympics in September.
Pursuant to its own confidentiality rules then in effect, USA Track and Field did not notify the IAAF of the positive doping test so as to enable the IAAF to bring the matter before its Arbitration Panel. Later, in 2003, it was disclosed that Young had tested positive in June 1999.
The IAAF admitted in 2004 that Young was wrongly cleared and should have been ineligible to compete in Sydney.
