West Allis, WI (My Sportsbook) - Paul Tracy won Saturday's Champ Car race at the Milwaukee Mile. The No.3 Forsythe Championship Racing driver crossed the finish line 3.369 seconds ahead of runner-up A.J. Allmendinger.
The victory was Tracy's first of the season, fourth at Milwaukee and 29th of his Champ Car career.
Tracy, took his first lead on lap 19, making a bold pass of pole winner Jimmy Vasser on the outside and was never headed.
"He and I were racing like two old salty seadogs," said Tracy. "We were going at it like 10 years ago, it was a lot of fun."
Tracy led a total of 192 laps and gave up the lead only during green-flag pit stops. The four-time Milwaukee winner built his lead to 4.812 seconds with 100 laps to go, but had to withstand a charge from Allmendinger before finally making his way to Victory Lane.
Allmendinger cut the lead to less than one second just as a debris caution came out on lap 210. On the final restart, Tracy powered to an overwhelming lead and the race winner was never challenged. The crafty veteran had left himself 19 seconds of "push-to-pass" (50 additional horsepower) while the second-year driver, Allmendinger, had used all his entire 60-second allotment earlier in the race.
The finish was Allmendinger's career best in the series. Oriol Servia, Justin Wilson and Vasser completed the top-five.
"I have to thank the whole engineering team, they gave me a perfect car," said Tracy.
"I think on old tires we had something for him, but on new tires he (Tracy) was a missle," said Allmendinger.
Last year's winner, Ryan Hunter-Reay, suffered a serious crash on lap five and was taken to the local hospital. He was said to be awake and alert, but complaining of neck pain.
With Bruno Junqueira sidelined with injuries sustained at this year's Indianapolis 500, his Newman-Haas Racing teammate Sebastien Bourdais inherited the championship lead. The Frenchman (77), who finished sixth, leads Wilson (70) by seven points and Tracy (69) by eight.
The fourth race in the series is scheduled for the Portland International Raceway on Sunday, June 19th.
