| (MySportsbook) - Heading into the season the American League East title was supposed to be a two-team race with the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox being the teams to battle it out for the division crown. Somewhere along the way, however, the Toronto Blue Jays jumped into the fray and thanks to their incredible lineup, have made things interesting in the once-uncompetitive East. With their 13-8 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday, the Jays moved two games back of the first-place Yankees and are now just 1 1/2 back of the Red Sox. One of the major reasons behind the Blue Jays drive towards the top has been the play of first baseman Carlos Delgado, who leads the AL in home runs (20) and RBI (70). "It seems like every time I get a hit, there's someone on base," Delgado said. "It's hard to explain, but you've got to give the credit to the guys in front of me. They've been getting on." "This is probably the best I'm hitting the ball. I've never had a problem seeing the ball -- sometimes I just don't hit it," Delgado joked. "I'm making some quality contact, my timing is pretty good. I guess I've got a pretty good approach, and basically all I've got to do is execute my plan. When I do that, I'll have good results." Delgado and centerfielder Vernon Wells, the two leading run producers in the AL have become the most lethal 1-2 punch in the majors. Their combined 130 RBI is the best in the league. As a team, Toronto leads the AL in runs (407), RBI (390) and its .294 average is second-best in the league to Boston. "It's fun to sit back and watch our club produce offensively," Toronto manager Carlos Tosca said. It all starts with Delgado, though, and with his 20th home run on Tuesday he set a club-record by reaching the plateau for an eighth time, surpassing Joe Carter's mark of seven. He also became the fastest Toronto player to reach 70 RBI, doing it in 64 games. His 34 homers and 99 RBI in interleague play are also a major league best. "He just continues to produce," Tosca added. "He's a big force in our lineup. I'm happy for him because he's a leader in our clubhouse, and he's a true professional." What makes Toronto's recent run even more impressive is the fact that the team has done it without leadoff hitter Shannon Stewart and reigning AL Rookie of the Year Eric Hinske, both of whom are sidelined with injuries. Another factor in the strong play of the Blue Jays has been the steady pitching of Tuesday's winner, Cory Lidle, and team ace Roy Halladay, who will be shooting for a club-record ninth straight win on Tuesday. Halladay, who was 19-7 a year ago, started the year 0-2 through his first six starts, but has rebounded nicely to win eight straight, matching Roger Clemens' 1997 team record. Lidle, who was the beneficiary of 19 hits and 13 runs on Tuesday, had won seven straight decisions earlier in the year. "Without the run support today, I probably would've went four innings. It makes it a lot easier to pitch," said Lidle, who improved his record to 9-4. "Nine wins with about a 5 ERA -- it doesn't add up, but I'll take them. It's not going exactly the way I want right now, but the way we're hitting the ball, I'll keep us in games." WHO'S HOT Designated hitter Josh Phelps had three hits with a homer and three RBI in Tuesday's victory. Over his past five games, the 25-year-old slugger is 8- for-15 and has seen his average rise to .274. WHO'S NOT Starter Mark Hendrickson is winless in his last four starts and has not lasted past the sixth inning in any of those outings. He has allowed 22 runs in that time, along with 23 hits in 18 innings. COMING UP After wrapping up their set with Pittsburgh on Thursday, the Blue Jays will welcome the Sammy Sosa-less Chicago Cubs to SkyDome for three games. Sosa will be serving his seven-game suspension during the series. |

| (MySportsbook) - Pirates ace pitcher Kris Benson, who missed the entire 2001 season because of shoulder surgery, continues to struggle. He was knocked around for eight runs on eight hits in just 2 1/3 innings of a 13-8 setback to the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday. He walked three and gave up three home runs. "I didn't make any pitches at all. I just didn't make the pitches and it cost us the ballgame," Benson told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Benson's 2 1/3 innings pitched tied a career low for an outing estab |
