Still, another bout of early-season underachieving by the Chargers, who dropped to 2-4 with a 20-17 loss at the lightly-regarded St. Louis Rams on Sunday, has to be making even the most mild-mannered denizen of San Diego a little testy. For a second straight week, the Chargers did not look ready to play when the game kicked off, finding themselves down 17-0 in the second quarter and never r |

Perhaps the Bucs will respond as they did to that previous loss, against the Steelers, when they play what would appear to be a winnable game versus the also-young St. Louis Rams and Raymond James Stadium this week. Freeman and Co. will have to show some more of the killer instinct that came through in the Jenkins episode "We're here to play, we're here to fight," Freeman said. "That's our mentality. | Bobby Carpenter. Carpenter, who was originally drafted by the Cowboys with the 18th overall pick in the 2006 draft, has been a disappointment in the NFL. The Ohio State product recorded just 10 tackles in five games with the Dolphins this season. The 6-foot-2, 249-pounder had spent the 2010 training camp with the St. Louis Rams after being acquired from Dallas in a May trade that sent offensive tackle Alex Barron to the Cowboys. Over four seasons with Dallas, Carpenter registered 96 tackles and 3 1/2 sacks. |

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Norv Turner says he's accountable for the San Diego Chargers getting off to the worst start in his four seasons as head coach. The Chargers tumbled to 2-4 with a 20-17 loss Sunday to the St. Louis Rams, who won only one game last season. Turner says he'll do everything he can to make sure the Chargers get their many problems straightened out. Some Chargers might have felt it was going to be an easy day, because Turner says he sensed frustration on the sideline when San Diego didn't g |

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The St. Louis Rams ranked among the league's worst teams statistically on offense and defense a year ago when they went 1-15. So far in 2010, both are dramatically improved for a team that is now 3-3 after Sunday's win over the Chargers. The Rams sacked San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers seven times on Sunday and is tied for sixth in the NFL with 17 through six games. Offensively, the Rams are improved behind rookie quarterback Sam Bradford, the No. 1 overall pick. And Steven Jackson |

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Steven Jackson took charge in the huddle. Then he backed it up on the field. The San Diego Chargers had shaved a 14-point cushion to three with 3:16 to play, capitalizing on the St. Louis Rams' conservative approach, when the two-time Pro Bowler barked in the huddle that enough was enough. Jackson carried five straight times for 28 yards and two first downs to help run out the clock, complementing a defense that sacked Philip Rivers seven times in a 20-17 victory on Sunday. ``It was |

ST. LOUIS (AP) - San Diego Chargers tight end Antonio Gates injured his left ankle and was taken to the locker room late in the first half. The team said Gates was being evaluated. Gates missed two plays earlier in the half Sunday against the St. Louis Rams after getting dinged blocking on a carry by Ryan Mathews. He returned after apparently walking off the injury on the sideline. Gates had two catches for 12 yards. He had scored in nine consecutive games, an NFL record for tight ends.Copyright © |
