SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley is out indefinitely after breaking his left leg during a 23-20 overtime win against the St. Louis Rams.

The fourth-year starter was on crutches after Sunday's game.

Staley apparently kept playing after an initial injury, but committed two penalties on San Francisco's go-ahead drive late in the fourth quarter. His holding penalty wiped out Troy Smith's 43-yard TD pass to Vernon Davis.

Staley has been the 49ers' starting left tackle since 2

00 yards of offense over a two-game losing streak. Arizona has not won since an Oct. 10 home victory over the New Orleans Saints improved the club to 3-2 heading to a bye week. Now at 3-5, the Cardinals are a game back of the co-leading Seahawks and St. Louis Rams for the NFC West's top spot. Arizona has won the division in each of the last two years. The Cardinals have dropped two straight games by just three points each, including last weekend's 27-24 overtime decision in Minnesota. They blew a 14- point ad
Rams vying to end road woes in San Francisco NFL Football 11/12/2010
(MySportsbook) - This Sunday's matchup at Candlestick Park featuring the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams could have been one between former first overall picks, but instead is more likely to feature a pair of Heisman Trophy- winning quarterbacks going head-to-head. Sam Bradford will look to keep his Rams atop the NFC West standings with a victory over a Troy Smith-led 49ers club that is trying to claw its way back into the divisional race. At 4-4, the Rams are even with Seattle for first place in th
Spagnuolo's system paying off in Year 2 for Rams NFL Football 11/12/2010

ST. LOUIS (AP) -It's the same system, pretty much the same players, too. All that time together is starting to pay off for a St. Louis Rams defense that's fast shedding its reputation as a punching bag.

In all but one of their first eight games, the Rams (4-4) have allowed 18 or fewer points. Opponents are converting only 36 percent of the time on third down. The unit is also putting a lot more pressure on the quarterback, with Chris Long riding a three-game sack streak and James Hall among the league le

Rams' Saffold held out with bruised shoulder NFL Football 11/11/2010

ST. LOUIS (AP) -St. Louis Rams rookie offensive tackle Rodger Saffold was held out of practice because of a bruise left shoulder he hurt earlier in the week.

Coach Steve Spagnuolo and Saffold said Thursday the move was precautionary. Renardo Foster took the bulk of practice snaps at Saffold's left tackle spot, but Saffold expects to play on Sunday at San Francisco.

Saffold was the second pick of the second round this year and was so impressive that the other tackle, Jason Smith, was moved to the right

He was benched for Gradkowski at halftime of the following week's contest and watched as the former sixth-round pick led three scoring drives in a 16-14 defeat of the St. Louis Rams.
