FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Former San Francisco 49ers running back Glen Coffee has been arrested on a gun charge in the Florida Panhandle. Fort Walton Beach police say he was arrested Thursday night and charged with possession of a concealed firearm. He was released from jail Friday morning. | (MySportsbook) - The Philadelphia Eagles have gone through a great deal of uncertainty during the early stages of the post-Donovan McNabb era, but that upheaval has still paled in comparison to the turmoil the San Francisco 49ers have experienced through this season's first four weeks. Seeking to avoid their first 0-5 start in 31 years, the frazzled 49ers return to Candlestick Park this Sunday for a key early October showdown with an Eagles team trying to break from the pack of the jumbled NFC East. SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Taylor Mays' transition into the starting lineup didn't exactly go as planned with the San Francisco 49ers, but now that he's there the rookie is preparing for a long stay in the team's secondary. Mays, who didn't play a defensive snap in San Francisco's first three games, was thrown into the lineup last week after veteran starter Michael Lewis abruptly left the team two days before its game at Atlanta. Mays leapfrogged veteran Reggie Smith on the depth chart to get the starting cal |

Ovie Mughelli, in particular, struggled badly against the San Francisco 49ers last week. His 9-yard holding penalty on a kickoff return forced the Atlanta offense to start a drive at the 7. Four plays later, San Francisco fooled Mughelli, the upback, by overloading the left side of the formation. With Mughelli's attention |

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Alex Smith continues to dwell at the bottom of the NFL passer rankings, but his starting job remains safe with the 0-4 San Francisco 49ers. For now, at least. Despite Smith's struggles and the effect they've had on a winless team, coach Mike Singletary said Wednesday that he's not considering a change at quarterback. ``I am nowhere near that point,'' Singletary said. ``When I look at Alex, I see growing pains of not just Alex Smith, but our team. I think Alex has done a decent j |

FALCONS: The dreaded let-down nearly reared its ugly head in the Atlanta Falcons' Week 4 contest against the San Francisco 49ers. One week after earning an important road victory at the Saints, Atlanta found itself down 14-0 early, and appeared dead to rights after a late Matt Ryan interception looked like it would allow the Niners to effectively seal a game they led 14-13 wi |

| San Francisco, CA (MySportsbook) - The San Francisco 49ers released starting strong safety Michael Lewis on Monday after he requested his release from the team. It was reported earlier that Lewis had left the team out of frustration after he was informed that rookie Taylor Mays would be phased into the starting role. "I want to thank Michael for his hard work and leadership as a 49er," said head coach Mike Singletary. The turmoil between Lewis and the 49ers started before the season when the nine-year pro took |

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Mike Singletary isn't worried about his job security following the San Francisco 49ers' 0-4 start. Singletary insists there's too much other stuff to get done than be concerned about his future with the franchise. If San Francisco doesn't win soon and turn around this surprising winless start, he understands he could become the fall guy. The Niners lost 16-14 on a last-second field goal at Atlanta on Sunday after jumping out to a 14-0 lead. They're having problems on both sides |
