SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley is out indefinitely after breaking his left leg during a 23-20 overtime win against the St. Louis Rams. The fourth-year starter was on crutches after Sunday's game. Staley apparently kept playing after an initial injury, but committed two penalties on San Francisco's go-ahead drive late in the fourth quarter. His holding penalty wiped out Troy Smith's 43-yard TD pass to Vernon Davis. Staley has been the 49ers' starting left tackle since 2008, |

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Quarterback Alex Smith is inactive for the San Francisco 49ers' game against St. Louis. Troy Smith is making his second straight start Sunday for the 49ers, who dressed just two quarterbacks to face the Rams. Alex Smith separated his left shoulder during the 49ers' loss to the Carolina Panthers last month. The former No. 1 draft pick didn't participate in much of last week's practices following San Francisco's bye week. David Carr will back up Troy Smith, who capped his first start for |

| (MySportsbook) - This Sunday's matchup at Candlestick Park featuring the San Francisco 49ers and St. Louis Rams could have been one between former first overall picks, but instead is more likely to feature a pair of Heisman Trophy- winning quarterbacks going head-to-head. Sam Bradford will look to keep his Rams atop the NFC West standings with a victory over a Troy Smith-led 49ers club that is trying to claw its way back into the divisional race. At 4-4, the Rams are even with Seattle for first place in the div |

The head ball coach recalled watching famed coach Howard ``Red'' Hickey use three QBs with the 1961 San Francisco 49ers. Hickey, best known for inventing the shotgun formation, rotated John Brodie, Billy Kilmer and Bob Waters. So Florida's not breaking any new ground with Brantley, Burton and Reed. ``They are three good players,'' Spurrier said. ``They all have t |

| Troy Smith San Francisco's starting QB for now |

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -For now, Troy Smith is the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. That could change in the next few days if Alex Smith is healthy enough to go by Sunday's game with St. Louis. That seems like a longshot. Coach Mike Singletary said Troy Smith would take all the snaps with the first-team offense in Wednesday's practice, though he didn't rule out Alex Smith taking back his old job if his separated, non-throwing left shoulder has improved enough to play against the Rams. These guys know we have a pretty tough game this Sunday." The Rams will visit the 2-6 San Francisco 49ers looking for their first road victory of 2010. St. Louis has dropped all three of its games as the visiting squad this year, six straight dating back to last season and 15 of its last 16 on the road stretching back to 2008.
