NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Kicker Joe Nedney, the San Francisco 49ers' most consistent offensive threat this season, was deactivated Sunday because of a groin injury that had him listed as doubtful against Tennessee. Nedney was replaced in the lineup by Jose Cortez, a former 49ers kicker who was signed Friday. Cortez had been released by Philadelphia on Tuesday. It wasn't the homecoming Nedney wanted. The nine-year veteran was released by the Titans in February in a salary cap move. In San Francisco he has 6 |

| Santa Clara, CA (MySportsbook) - The San Francisco 49ers signed kicker Jose Cortez and waived quarterback Jesse Palmer on Friday. Cortez, who has played for Dallas and Philadelphia this season, will likely fill in for injured starter Joe Nedney this Sunday when the Niners take on the Tennessee Titans. Nedney suffered a groin injury on Thursday at practice and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game. A kicker for the Niners in 2001 and part of 2002, Cortez spent the first seven weeks of the 2005 season with the |

New England's depleted secondary situation has led the Patriots to rank next- to-last in the league in passing defense (263.4 yards per game), ahead of only the woeful San Francisco 49ers. For the moment, New England appears set with a starting secondary of rookie Ellis Hobbs (23 tackles, 1 INT) and Asante Samuel (40 tackles, 1 INT) at the corners, Eugene Wilson (53 tackles, 1 INT) at free safety, and Michael Stone (23 tackles) at th |

The quick title -- equalled only by the 1985 Chicago Bears, the 1997 San Francisco 49ers and last season's Philadelphia Eagles -- would give Seattle an automatic home game in the playoffs, whether in round one of the postseason or, if they maintain their current standing as the NFC's top team, after a round one bye. | (MySportsbook) - Don't tell the San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee Titans that the only thing riding on their battle in Nashville this week is 2006 draft position. Both clubs, you can be assured, will be earnestly seeking a rare positive moment in what has been a dismal 2005 campaign for each. The 49ers travel to the Music City riding a three-game losing streak, a skein that was extended with last Sunday's heartbreaking 27-25 loss to the Seahawks. In the defeat, Mike Nolan and company snapped a string of 15 stra |

Houston has thrown for an average of 114.1 yards per game and ranked above only the San Francisco 49ers. Any way you slice it, the Rams defense just has not been good this season. For example, they are 29th in the league in total defense and last in the NFL in scoring (30 ppg). Last week, St. Louis was torched by the arm of former Ram quarterback Kurt |

We're hungry for a win, and this is another opportunity for us to get a win.'' The San Francisco 49ers agree. ``Somebody is coming out 3-8 baby,'' 49ers kicker Joe Nedney said. ``We don't see ourselves as a 2-8 team, and I'm sure Tennessee doesn't ... It is a cliche to say, and I'm sure everyone is saying that I'm reaching for something. I think th |

| (MySportsbook) - It took a huge leap of faith to believe that the San Francisco 49ers would be able to stay with the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Hawks were riding high at 7-2, the Niners were 2-7 and dropping like a cable car full of Rice-a-Roni that had just been pushed into the Bay. San Francisco hadn't scored a touchdown in 12 quarters, and Seattle was in possession of Shaun Alexander, the one-man scoring machine. The 49er offense couldn't protect its quarterback, and the Seahawks led the NFC in sacks. T |

The 1991 Washington Redskins won their first 11 games en route to a Super Bowl title, while the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers each opened the 1990 campaign 10-0. The Giants beat the Niners in the championship game that season on the way to the Super Bowl crown.
