ted last February, five Rams players who had suffered turf burns in 2003 developed a type of staph infection that is resistant to a common antibiotic known as methicillin.

An article in the New England Journal of Medicine said a few members of the San Francisco 49ers developed infections after playing the Rams early that season.

Last week, Joe Vitt, who served as the Rams' interim coach for the last 11 games of the season, checked into a hospital for treatment of a lingering strep infection on his hand. It was

Fisher, Nolan to coach Senior Bowl teams Division I College Football 01/05/2006

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - The Tennessee Titans' Jeff Fisher and Mike Nolan of the San Francisco 49ers will coach in the Senior Bowl along with their staffs.

The NFL selects the coaching staffs for the Jan. 28 game, an audition for senior prospects. Fisher and his staff will coach the North, and Nolan and his staff the South, it was announced Thursday.

Nolan has been an assistant coach in the Senior Bowl four times, the latest when he was Washington's defensive coordinator in 1998.

``I think coaching in the Seni

and hearing newly acquired players talk about how the Broncos do everything the right way. This is, after all, a team that hasn't won a playoff game since '98.

The coach, however, refused to waver.

He says his experience as an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers in the early '90s is one reason he views things this way.

``The secretaries, the grounds crew, the marketing people, there was one constant talk there, and that was about winning Super Bowls,'' he says.

game. ``It's just too bad we came up short.''

It was the last game Kubiak would play.

Kubiak, who did not make himself available for interviews Wednesday, went on to be an assistant at Texas A&M, then caught on as quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers in 1994, when Shanahan was offensive coordinator and the Niners won the Super Bowl.

When Shanahan got the head-coaching job at Denver in 1995, Kubiak came with him as his coordinator. They've worked together ever since, producing an offense ranked

Former NFL scout dead at 78 This Day in Sports 01/04/2006

LAKE CITY, Fla. (AP) - Cornelius ``Neil'' Schmidt, who spent 28 years scouting for the San Francisco 49ers and other NFL teams, has died at 78.

Schmidt died last Thursday at a veterans hospital, the Guerry Funeral Home said Wednesday.

He also played halfback at Purdue from 1948-50, winning the school's Gimlet Club trophy symbolic of the outstanding senior athlete during his four years at the university.

Schmidt spent nearly three decades scouting college talent for NFL teams. He spent eight seasons with B

Lions contact Singletary about coaching vacancy NFL Football 01/03/2006
E, Wis. (AP) - The Detroit Lions have contacted Hall of Fame linebacker Mike Singletary about their vacant coaching job.

Asked if he thought he was ready to be an NFL head coach, Singletary said, ``Absolutely.''

Singletary, an assistant with the San Francisco 49ers, said Tuesday night the Lions have spoken to him, but an interview has not yet been scheduled.

He also has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Green Bay Packers' vacant coaching job, but Singletary said the Packers have not contacted h

And the Houston Texans are on the clock NFL Football 01/03/2006
(MySportsbook) - The Houston Texans' disastrous 2005 campaign ended on Sunday with another disappointing loss, as they were upended by the equally abysmal San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, in overtime. "As bad a season as it's been for us, I don't know why we wanted to drag it out one more quarter," center Steve McKinney said. "I guess that seems appropriate, huh, considering the way things have gone?" With the loss, the Texans fell to a franchise-worst 2-14 and locked up the No. 1 pick in this April's NFL Draft, whi
Niners Need to Carry Momentum Into Offseason NFL Football 01/03/2006
(MySportsbook) - Improvement in the NFL is measured by wins and losses, and in that regard, the San Francisco 49ers made strides in 2005. In their first year under head coach Mike Nolan, the Niners jumped from 2-14 to 4-12, ending the season on the high of a two-game winning streak. If nothing else, Nolan deserves credit for doubling the team's win total. But is San Francisco close to winning a NFC West title, which was Nolan's stated first goal when he took the helm? Niners' Nolan sees progress in debut season NFL Football 01/02/2006

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - When Mike Nolan looks back on a tumultuous season filled with fumbles, injuries, bad personnel decisions and a dozen losses, the coach still wouldn't change a thing about his debut year with the San Francisco 49ers.

``It was important for me to learn what really needs to be done, and not to come in and guess,'' Nolan said Monday as the 49ers packed up their lockers and left their training complex for the winter.

``The adversity we faced was very valuable. I'm glad we faced some of
