Baas admits he felt a little awkward about the situation, but no one has held it against him.

``That speaks of the character of the guys in the room, and what good guys they are,'' said Bass, who played his first six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. ``They had great guys there for a long time and I know it's a (lousy) part of the business, but they have done a really good job of accepting me and bringing me along and giving me everything to help the offensive line succeed and to help this team

Goldson stays with 49ers NFL Football 08/08/2011
Santa Clara, CA (MySportsbook) - Defensive back Dashon Goldson came to terms on a one-year contract Monday to remain with the San Francisco 49ers. The 26-year-old Goldson, a fourth-round pick in the 2007 draft, has started in all 16 games each of the past two seasons. He had four interceptions in 2009 and one last year. "Dashon's a 49er and I'm glad he's coming back," 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Dashon Goldson is back with the San Francisco 49ers after all - despite all his tweets to the contrary.

The free agent safety agreed to terms on a one-year contract Monday to rejoin the Niners. Coach Jim Harbaugh discussed the addition of Goldson after Monday's practice in Santa Clara, but said he wasn't sure whether Goldson would be on the practice field for the first time Tuesday morning, an open workout for fans.

``We'll see,'' Harbaugh said.

49ers sign S Whitner to three-year deal NFL Football 08/06/2011
San Francisco, CA (MySportsbook) - The San Francisco 49ers signed safety Donte Whitner to a three-year contract on Saturday. Whitner, 26, spent the first five years of his career in Buffalo after the Bills selected him with the eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft. The Ohio State product played 69 games with the club and totaled five interceptions, three forced fumbles, 1 1/2 sacks and 451 tackles, including a career-high 140 stops last season. San Francisco also signed cornerback Carlos Rogers and safety Madi

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Donte Whitner stepped on the field for the first time with the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, welcoming the responsibility that comes with his new role as the most experienced and highest-paid safety on the team.

Whitner officially signed his three-year deal with San Francisco earlier in the day, giving the 49ers a veteran leader in their revamped secondary and a missing piece in the 3-4 scheme being implemented by new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.

Veteran CB Carlos Rogers eager for change NFL Football 08/06/2011

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Rogers needed a change.

The veteran cornerback is in the right place for that with the San Francisco 49ers, who are making big changes this summer on a defense that has lost five starters.

Rogers is in a position to fill one of those voids, but that's not the only thing that convinced him to start fresh on the opposite end of the country after spending his first six NFL seasons with the Washington Redskins.

"I wanted something new, an environment that is not (revolving) a

Braylon Edwards joins 49ers NFL Football 08/04/2011

Quarterback Smith gets another shot with Niners NFL Football 08/04/2011

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Alex Smith gently cradled the football in his right arm as he waited his turn to throw - getting going on the field at last, yet another fresh start with his only NFL team.

Smith is back behind center for the San Francisco 49ers, seven months after this scenario seemed like such a longshot for the 2005 No. 1 overall pick out of Utah.

The embattled quarterback had been booed and benched, cheered and promoted once more. Smith stuck in there when many hoped he would just be gone.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Wide receiver Braylon Edwards has agreed to a $3.5 million, one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers.

Edwards' agent, Ben Dogra, confirmed the deal to The Associated Press on Thursday, less than an hour before San Francisco's free agents could take the field for the first time.

Edwards tweeted that he agreed to a deal with the 49ers. Dogra was hopeful his client would be on the field for the first workout if everything was finalized in time.

The 28-year-old Edwards had 53
