PITTSBURGH (AP) -Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Max Starks signed his tender offer of $1.85 million for the 2007 season Friday, the last day the he could do so. The Steelers have not negotiated with Starks on an extension past 2007, a sign they will allow him to become an unrestricted free agent next year. By tendering an offer to the 6-foot-8, 340-pound Starks, the Steelers forced any team that wanted to sign the offensive lineman this year to give up a first-round draft pick. PITTSBURGH (AP) -The NFL season is nearly five months away, yet the Pittsburgh Steelers may send a signal as early as Saturday what their opponents must prepare for in the future. Will the Steelers play the 3-4 defense or the 4-3? Right now, only coach Mike Tomlin and defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau know, but the rest of the league may get in on the secret beginning this weekend. The Steelers have long been the staunchest proponent of the 3-4 system, which relies on the outside linebackers rather than the |

PITTSBURGH (AP) -For a team that professes the NFL draft should be about acquiring talent rather than filling needs, the Pittsburgh Steelers certainly have been predictable lately in the early rounds. A receiver, or a defensive back. A defensive back, or a receiver. Of their top 15 picks in the last eight drafts - they dealt away their second-round pick last year - the Steelers chose five receivers and four defensive backs. During this time, five of their first-rounders were receivers, cornerbacks or safeti |

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Bill Cowher was missing, but perhaps not universally missed given an unexpected but telling comment by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Joey Porter wasn't around, either, as was easily discernible in a much-quieter-than-usual locker room. Alan Faneca was absent, too, though for entirely different reasons than Porter, a situation that could prove to be Mike Tomlin's first test as the new Steelers coach. Under the first sunny sky Pittsburgh has seen in nearly two weeks, a |

PITTSBURGH (AP) -Defensive end Nick Eason, who played for the Cleveland Browns the past two seasons, signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday. Eason, a fourth-round draft pick by the Browns from Clemson in 2003, was waived by Cleveland in 2004. He spent part of the 2005 season on the Denver Broncos' practice squad before rejoining the Browns late that season. The Steelers traditionally sign players such as Eason to an NFL minimum-salary contract - $510,000 for a player with Eason's experience. The 6-f |

The Dolphins acquired linebacker Joey Porter after eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and signed New York Giants kicker Jay Feely as a free agent. Feely replaced longtime Dolphins' kicker Olindo Mare. Porter said he hasn't adjusted to South Florida's temperature yet, but he is adapting to the Dolphins' defense. ``Football is foot |

WASHINGTON (AP) -Lynn Swann is thinking about running for Congress. The former Pittsburgh Steelers star, a Republican who lost Pennsylvania's gubernatorial race last fall, said Thursday he has been approached to run for the Pittsburgh-area seat held by Democratic Rep. Jason Altmire. ``I'm still collecting information,'' Swann, of Sewickley Heights, told The Associated Press in a phone interview. ``People are still talking to me about it.'' Since Bradshaw won his fourth Super Bowl title with the Pittsburgh Steelers in January 1980, more than half of the NFL championships - 14 of 27 - have been won by quarterbacks taken after the first round. And six of the first-round winners did it with a team other than the one that drafted him. While few teams in need of |

Like Upshaw, he noted this week that those who did stray often got the celebrity treatment from the authorities. That happens no longer. In fact, Upshaw says he's heard people blame Darrent Williams, the Denver cornerback who was sho |
