| ven that the Redskins have one of the most experienced and expensive coaching staffs in NFL history, it hardly seems fair to start Childress off this way, even if he was a regular visitor to Washington during his seven years as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles. ``At one time all those guys were first-time starters, too,'' Minnesota quarterback Brad Johnson said. ``Sometimes you've got to learn. Experience is only good if you get it done, but obviously they're proven. They're all Hall of Fame people. But |

HOUSTON (AP) -Houston Texans running back Ron Dayne was inactive for Sunday's opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Dayne, signed Monday by the Texans, had been released by Denver after missing three of four preseason games with turf toe. The 1999 Heisman Trophy winner was listed third on the Texans depth chart this week. Rookie running back Chris Taylor was signed from the practice squad and linebacker Roy Manning was released to make room for Taylor on the roster.Copyright © 2005 The Associated Pre |

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -A poor defense contributed to the collapse of the Philadelphia Eagles last season as much as injuries and the T.O. soap opera. While the problems on defense were overshadowed by the 17 players who were placed on injured reserve and you-know-who being kicked off the team, fixing the defense was a top priority in the offseason. So, the Eagles addressed their biggest needs by signing free agent defensive end Darren Howard and drafting defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley in the first round. The |

He's hoping for a bit more success against the real McNabb when the defensive end makes his regular season debut for Houston against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. ``It's going to be a challenge,'' Williams said. ``We as a unit have to contain him or slow him down at least.'' It will be a day of challenges for the young and revamped Texans when they face a healthy McNabb and the ready-to-rebound |

| ce that day in Denver - way back on Oct. 30 - underscores why no matter how great he performs, his talent is rarely the first thing people talk about. Fed up with gripes over his contract, squabbles with Donovan McNabb and other indiscretions, the Philadelphia Eagles dumped Owens before the next game. They even got lawyers involved to make sure he never returned. Although team officials knew what they were getting into when they acquired him in 2004, and despite Owens almost leading them to their first Super B |

ST. LOUIS (AP) -Having survived impalement, exhibiting courage as a kickoff returner will be no problem at all for the St. Louis Rams' newest player. Three days after playing in the 2005 Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles, J.R. Reed failed in an attempt to leap a chest-high wrought-iron fence adorned with decorative spikes. He found himself hanging upside down with one of the spikes gouging his left leg behind the knee, the blood pouring out. When he was finally rescued, he discovered he couldn't walk |

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -The Philadelphia Eagles don't want to hear about rebuilding. The Eagles followed a three-point loss in the Super Bowl with a disastrous season in which they finished 6-10. For the players and coaching staff, last year was merely an aberration. They blamed it on too many injuries and too much T.O. Now that Terrell Owens is gone and key players are healthy, there are no major distractions, the team is unified and determined to show the rest of the NFL it still belongs among the elite. ``I |

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -The Cleveland Browns' crazy carousel at center took another spin on Saturday. The club, which has gone through four starting centers since the start of training camp, acquired veteran Hank Fraley from the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional pick in the 2008 draft. Fraley's arrival will hopefully solidify a problematic position, which has dominoed into more chaos since Pro Bowl free agent LeCharles Bentley sustained a season-ending knee injury on the Browns' first contact play of training |
