Weis, the former offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, decided to have the surgery shortly after the Patriots' February 2002 Super Bowl victory over the St. Louis Rams.

gastric bypass surgery, allowing him to bleed internally for more than a day.

Weis' lawyer, Michael Mone, made his comments at the start of the coach's malpractice trial.

Weis had the surgery in June 2002 while he was an assistant coach for the New England Patriots after battling obesity for years. He weighed about 350 pounds at the time.

Weis alleges in the lawsuit that Massachusetts General Hospital physicians Charles Ferguson and Richard Hodin acted negligently and left Weis so close to death that he rece

The coaching exodus follows the Chargers' shocking 24-21 loss to the New England Patriots on Jan. 14. After going an NFL-best 14-2, the Chargers had four turnovers and committed numerous other mistakes.

While league MVP Tomlinson no longer has any bad feelings toward the New England Patriots' three-time Super Bowl-winning coach after their playoff meeting, another San Diego player's feud still might be simmering: Merriman pointedly refused to speak to reporters after working out alongside Taylor, Miami's NFL defensive player of the year

Patriots LT Light selected for Pro Bowl NFL Football 02/06/2007

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -New England Patriots left tackle Matt Light was chosen for the Pro Bowl on Tuesday, replacing Jonathan Ogden of the Baltimore Ravens on the AFC team.

Light was selected for the first time in his six NFL seasons. He will be New England's only representative in Saturday's game in Honolulu after defensive end Richard Seymour, who had elbow and groin problems, withdrew because of injury.

Not long after it finally happened, after all those tough seasons in Tampa and the handful in Indianapolis when a tough break or his nemesis, New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, pulled the rug out from under Dungy, Peyton Manning and the Colts, Dungy pulled one of his three sons, 15-year-old Eric, up onto the podium and asked a few photographers to snap away.

born. And on Sunday, Wade - a proud Chicagoan - will see Urlacher and the Bears play the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl at Dolphin Stadium.

Wade has no recollection of the Bears' last title; he had just turned 4 when Chicago rolled past the New England Patriots 46-10 in the Super Bowl 21 years ago. So he's enjoying this experience, made especially sweet for him by the fact that it's happening in the city Wade led to last season's NBA championship.

Favre's accomplishments include winning three league MVP awards - he shared 1997 honors with Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders - and throwing two touchdown passes in a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in the 1997 Super Bowl to give the Packers their first championship in 29 years. Earlier in that championship season, Favre spent time in the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kan., battling an addiction to painkillers.

He even took many of the same paths, starting with Temple University, where Joe earned All-America honors and Dan was the Big East's defensive player of the year. Both started their pro careers in the Northeast, Joe with the Jets, Dan with the New England Patriots. And both eventually wound up in Indianapolis.

The primary difference was that the older Klecko had a prototypical defensive lineman's body at 6-foot-3, 263 pounds when he entered the league in 1977.

Report: Former Patriots LB says Belichick prodded him to practice with concussion Headlines 02/02/2007

NEW YORK (AP) -Former New England Patriots linebacker Ted Johnson said coach Bill Belichick subjected him to hard hits in practice while he was recovering from a concussion - against the advice of the team's top trainer.

Johnson, who helped the Patriots win three Super Bowl titles before retiring two years ago, told The New York Times that a collision with another player during that 2002 practice led to another concussion. And, after sustaining additional concussions over the next three seasons, he now forgets
