Sauerbrun to miss start of season after failed test NFL Football 04/21/2007
Englewood, CO (MySportsbook) - The Denver Broncos agreed to a one-year contract with punter Todd Sauerbrun on Friday. The contract came after a controversy over Sauerbrun's availability, as the New England Patriots, with whom Sauerbrun signed a one-year deal in December of 2006, claimed right of first refusal. The case went to a special master, who ruled in Sauerbrun's favor. Shanahan told him: ``Just stay clean, just stay out of trouble,'' Sauerbrun said.

``I'd done it for a while,'' said Sauerbrun, who punted for the New England Patriots in the playoffs last season. ``He has faith in me. I don't want to let him down. I don't want to let the team down. To hell with myself. I don't want to let the guys down.''

The deal came less than 24 hours after an arbitrator ruled his contract with the New England Patriots was void.

Sauerbrun, 34, agreed to a one-year deal with the Broncos earlier this month, but the Patriots matched it through a clause in his contract with New England. Sauerbrun had signed with the Patriots last December and punted in the playoffs.

BOSTON (AP) - Punter Todd Sauerbrun won his grievance against the New England Patriots on Wednesday and is now a free agent.

The 13-year veteran is expected to join the Denver Broncos. He agreed to a one-year deal with them earlier this month, but the Patriots matched it through a clause in his contract with New England. Sauerbrun had signed with the Patriots last December and punted in the playoffs.

Sauerbrun, with the help of the NFL Players Association, contended that the clause was inappropriate because
