COMING UP After winding up a four-game set with the Texas Rangers on Thursday, the Angels head north to battle the Oakland A's at the Coliseum. At the beginning of next week the team returns to Edison Field for three games against the Kansas City Royals and three versus the Minnesota Twins heading into the All- Star Break.

seasons. As of now St. Louis has the worst record of any first place team in the Majors. Their 43-40 record would not rank higher then third place in any other division in baseball, except the AL Central where they would be tied for second with the Minnesota Twins. Their 18-22 road record also ranks last among division leaders. Last season the Cards finished with a 57-33 record against the NL Central, but with the All-Star break on the horizon St. Louis is just 23-21 against their division rivals. Another pro

in to come around we become a very, very tough team." On Tuesday, the Sox lineup got a bit of an added boost with the acquisitions of second baseman Roberto Alomar and volatile outfielder Carl Everett, sending a message to the Royals, as well as the Minnesota Twins, that they are indeed ready to jump into the mix in the Central. "I wanted to be able to look out on the field and envision a team that not only can make the playoffs, but possibly the World Series," Chicago general manager Kenny Williams said. "The
White Sox acquire Roberto Alomar from Mets MLB Baseball 07/01/2003
Chicago, IL (MySportsbook) - The Chicago White Sox acquired second baseman Roberto Alomar and cash considerations on Tuesday from the New York Mets in exchange for three minor league prospects. The Mets obtained minor league pitchers Royce Ring and Edwin Almonte along with infielder Andrew Salvo in return for the potential Hall of Fame candidate. New York began its expected youth movement, as the team is currently mired in last place in the NL East, 16 1/2 games behind front- running Atlanta. The 35-year-old Alomar is batting just .262 with two home runs and 22 runs batted in this season. He has been successful in all six of his steal attempts, but has committed six errors in 73 games. Alomar has been a big disappointment since coming to the Mets in a trade prior to the 2002 season. He came to New York along with pitcher Mike Bacsik from the Cleveland Indians in exchange for outfielders Matt Lawton and Alex Escobar, pitcher Jerrod Riggan and two players-to-be-named-later (pitcher Billy Traber and infielder Earl Snyder) on December 11, 2001. The 16-year major league veteran owns a career .302 average. He finished last year hitting only .266, with 11 home runs and 53 RBI in 149 games. Alomar has also spent some time with the San Diego Padres, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles. He has accumulated 10 Gold Glove Awards and 12 All-Star selections. "We wish Roberto the best," Mets general manager Jim Duquette said. "This is a chance for him to be reunited with his brother (Sandy) and I'm sure it will be an excellent situation for him. We are thrilled with the players we acquired." Alomar joins his brother, catcher Sandy Alomar Jr., on the White Sox, who have won four of their last five games and have crept within 3 1/2 games of the AL Central division-leading Minnesota Twins. "Roberto gives us athleticism and experience on the right side of the infield," stated Chicago general manager Ken Williams. "He is one of the best second base gloves in the history of the game and his presence will help improve our team defense."
