Saints, Colts strong in NY Life Protection Index, but dreams of Super Bowl return end early Headlines 01/11/2011

NORTHBROOK, Ill. (STATS) - The New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts did an excellent job protecting their respective Pro Bowl quarterbacks this season.

Ultimately, though, giving Drew Brees and Peyton Manning time to throw wasn't enough.

New Orleans and Indianapolis graded out well once again in the New York Life Protection Index on wild-card weekend, but both teams saw their hopes of a return to the Super Bowl slip away.

The Jets earned a trip to Foxborough, Mass., for the divisional playoff round next Sunday by beating the Indianapolis Colts 17-16 on Saturday night. Had the Jets lost, the Patriots would have played the winner of Sunday's game between Baltimore and Kansas City.

NEW YORK (AP) - Rex Ryan and the Jets took care of one nemesis by edging Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts.

Next up: Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots.

Moments after a blowout loss a month ago, Ryan said he wanted to go out and play the Patriots again. He had to wait a few weeks, but the Jets (12-5) get their shot at revenge next Sunday at Foxborough.

Ryan added fuel to an already heated rivalry a few days ago when he said no one studies the game the way Manning does, even th
