DENVER (AP) -The Denver Broncos' cuts ranged from the expected - running back Ron Dayne - to the unexpected, wide receiver Darius Watts. Both players left team headquarters Saturday after being told they weren't going to make the 53-man roster. ``I kind of understand. Once I got hurt, the other guys stepped up,'' said Dayne, who began training camp as the starting tailback but quickly was surpassed by undrafted rookie Mike Bell and then suffered turf toe in the preseason opener and didn't play again.

DENVER (AP) -Dwayne Carswell's comeback fell short. The offensive lineman and one-time Pro Bowl tight end who was trying to return from a life-threatening auto accident that cut short his 2005 season was waived Friday by the Denver Broncos. Coach Mike Shanahan met with a stream of players at the team's headquarters and Carswell emerged with the news that his 12-year career in Denver was over. ``He said it was a tough decision and that he wanted to go in a different direction,'' Carswell said. Vanderbilt is looking to fill a big void at quarterback left by the departure of last year's Southeastern Conference offensive player of the year, Jay Cutler, now playing for the Denver Broncos. Chris Nickson is expected to start at QB after throwing three passes as Cutler's backup last season and redshirting two years ago.
