| Tigers RF Ordonez leaves game |
MLB Baseball |
06/28/2008 |
| |
| Detroit, MI (MySportsbook) - Detroit Tigers right fielder Magglio Ordonez left Saturday's thrilling 7-6 win over the Colorado Rockies in the third inning due to right oblique spasms. He will be examined further on Sunday. Ordonez appeared to pull up as he chased after Troy Tulowitzki's lead-off double. The reigning American League batting champ, Ordonez singled in his only plate appearance and was replaced by Ryan Raburn, who clubbed his first career grand slam and scored the winning run. The Tigers began the season with seven straight losses and scuffled through the first two months of the season, but now the team is starting to finally come around. Also struggling early on this season, Justin Verlander has slowly turned the page on that atrocious start and comes into this game with a |

| NL is no match for Royals |
MLB Baseball |
06/27/2008 |
| |
| (MySportsbook) - It's not every day the Kansas City Royals can be dubbed one of the hottest teams in the majors. Then again, it's not every day the Royals get to feast on the also-rans of the National League. Kansas City's three-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies this week pushed its interleague record to a major league-best 12-3. The Royals and 'Major League-best' aren't often synonymous. But it's a welcome change for a franchise accustomed to leading the majors in things like stranded baserunners and empty seats. Kansas City has won five straight, and 10 of its last 11. During that stretch, the Royals have cut their deficit in the American League Central from 12 1/2 games out of first place, to 7 1/2 games back. Just as importantly, for the first time in a month they no longer hold that last-place moniker. At least, for now. "That's a step, no doubt," Royals manager Trey Hillman said. "Sometimes you'd like to take giant steps, but we dug ourselves such a big hole, we just have to get back in it in baby steps." Only a month ago, Kansas City was mired in a 12-game skid. So, you can't blame Hillman for his cautiously optimistic assessment. Still, there is no denying this is a rejuvenated team playing with a different mind set. At the moment, the Royals are getting it done both offensively and defensively. They rank 6th in the AL in team batting average (.263), and third in fielding percentage (.986). And their pitching has been nothing short of spectacular lately. In their 10 wins during this stretch, Royals hurlers have allowed an average of just 2.6 earned runs per game. Center fielder David DeJesus pointed out that hitters are "moving guys over and getting clutch hits." But he knows the players have to keep an even keel despite their recent success. One guy who certainly bears some of the responsibility for the turnaround is Ross Gload, who has started at first base during the entire 11-game stretch. Gload kept the streak alive with three hits in Wednesday's 4-2 win over Colorado, including a two-run double in the sixth inning that extended Kansas City's lead to 4-1. On top of watching his team win in 10 of his 11 starts at first, Gload has also managed to hit safely in five straight games (9-for-19). "Right now we're hitting on all cylinders," right-hander Luke Hochevar told the Kansas City Star after picking up his fifth win of the season on Wednesday. "We've been swinging the bats outstandingly. We've been playing awesome defense, and we've been putting together some good pitching." ARMS SWAP The team on Wednesday optioned reliever Yasuhiko Yabuta to Triple-A Omaha, after the righty struggled with a 1-3 record and a 5.46 ERA in 26 appearances this season. Hillman cited a lack of consistency as the reason for the demotion. Signed last winter with the intent of becoming a setup man, Yabuta went 1-3 with a blown save in his last six games, while giving up five earned runs. His spot in the bullpen will be filled by right-hander Robinson Tejeda, 26, who was claimed off waivers from the Texas Rangers on Tuesday. "Our scouts liked him as somebody with a power arm that could be used in a variety of roles -- long or short," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said on the team's Web site. "He's young and we had several people in our organization who have not only seen him, but know him personally, and felt that he's a guy with more upside. Pitching as both a reliever (one save) and a starter (four starts) for Triple- A Oklahoma during the first two months of this season, Tejeda was 1-1 with a 2.18 ERA. He came onto the big league scene in 2005 with the Philadelphia Phillies, going 4-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 26 games (13 starts). WHO'S HOT Starting shortstop. That new title that seems to fit Mike Aviles quite well in Kansas City. In 20 games, Aviles is hitting .333 with three homers, nine doubles, a triple and 14 RBI. Over the last 28 games, Jose Guillen (.350) and DeJesus (.364) have been as hot as anybody across the league. WHO'S NOT Third baseman Alex Gordon has fallen off a bit, hitting just .217 over that same stretch. He has just three hits in his last 22 at-bats. A LOOK AHEAD Gil Meche (5-8, 4.91) looks to help the Royals continue their interleague dominance on Friday against Joel Pineiro (2-3, 3.86) and the St. Louis Cardinals. Kyle Davies (3-0, 3.12) looks to rebound from his last outing, which lasted just 1 1/2 innings, as he will most likely face Mark Mulder (0-0, 0.00), who is slated make his long-awaited return to the rotation. And on Sunday, Brian Bannister (7-6, 4.47) will close out the series against Braden Looper (9-5, 4.22). Kansas City returns to American League action on Monday to face the Baltimore Orioles, with Zack Greinke (7-4, 3.40) squaring off against Brian Burres (6-5, 5.29). |
