| Jets' Mangini, Dolphins' Saban cross paths again - this time as head coaches |
NFL Football |

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -Eric Mangini and Nick Saban first crossed paths 11 years ago when they were on Bill Belichick's coaching staff with the Cleveland Browns. Mangini was an eager, fresh-faced assistant in his first NFL job, while Saban was the Browns' defensive coordinator and was set to become the head coach at Michigan State. ``I probably drove him to the airport when he went to Michigan State,'' Mangini said. ``That's the magic of the NFL.'' Now the two will practice their football tricks fr |

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -The Cleveland Browns are doing some self-evaluation during their bye week. What they see isn't pretty. After a 1-4 start, the Browns are trying to figure out why their free agent acquisitions and the return of two offensive weapons haven't translated into more wins. ``You can be better on paper, but ultimately you have to be better on Sunday,'' coach Romeo Crennel said. ``We haven't been as good on Sunday. But I see progress being made.'' Crennel readily acknowledges that when he an |

He was replaced on the roster by former Green Bay defensive lineman Kenny Peterson, who practiced Wednesday. | Panthers' defense finally starting to show its teeth |
NFL Football |
10/11/2006 |
| |
| (MySportsbook) - The Carolina Panthers' defense decided to get back down to business this week, and Charlie Frye and the Cleveland Browns paid the price. In Sunday's 20-12 victory over the Browns, the Panthers did all of the things -- stuffing the run, mercilessly pressuring the quarterback and forcing crucial turnovers -- that made their defense one of the most feared units in the NFL heading into this season. Carolina had been solid but sporadic on that side of the ball through the first four weeks, having |

| (MySportsbook) - This was supposed to be the year the Cleveland Browns took a big step back towards respectability. An offseason spending spree on the free-agent market seemingly plugged up a number of glaring holes, and the team had an up-and-coming offense spearheaded by two ultra-talented but oft-injured young playmakers in wide receiver Braylon Edwards and tight end Kellen Winslow, plus a blossoming second-year quarterback in Charlie Frye. Things haven't quite gone to plan so far, however. Through their |

| Davie, FL (MySportsbook) - The Miami Dolphins waived running back Lee Suggs on Tuesday. The Dolphins claimed Suggs off waivers from the Cleveland Browns in early September and the running back played in all five games this season for Miami, compiling just 26 rushing yards on six attempts. The often-injured Suggs has rushed for 1,074 yards and four touchdowns on 269 carries in 30 NFL games with Miami and the Cleveland Browns. He also has 28 receptions for 217 yards and one score. |

BEREA, Ohio (AP) -Bye week in the NFL is a time for some rest, reflection and maybe a little tinkering. The Cleveland Browns could use all three after their worst start since they returned to the league as an expansion team in 1999. Other than a victory over winless Oakland and some strong special teams play, the Browns don't have much to show for their first five weeks of the season. ``We're 1-4. That's what we are,'' coach Romeo Crennel said Monday. A day after the Browns failed to score a touchdow |
