Panthers' top pick Newton ready for scrutiny Headlines 04/29/2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Before signing off on the decision to draft Cam Newton No. 1 overall, Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson invited the former Auburn quarterback to his home. Richardson then read Newton a letter from a fan who questioned whether Newton ``wants to be great.''

A day after the Panthers decided he has that drive to be a franchise quarterback, Newton stood at a podium on Friday in a crisp gray suit and blue tie and vowed to push himself every day.

NEW YORK (AP) - Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is the first pick of the 2011 NFL draft, going to the Carolina Panthers.

The Heisman Trophy winner was projected as the player most likely to be called first - and he was, by Commissioner Roger Goodell, who was repeatedly booed by fans at Radio City Music Hall.

Goodell told them ``I hear you'' as fans, reacting to the current labor dispute, chanted, ``We want football.''

Newton led Auburn to an undefeated season and it first national championship since 1957.

Panthers gamble on Cam Newton No. 1 overall Headlines 04/28/2011

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Panthers have selected Auburn quarterback Cam Newton with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, gambling that the Heisman Trophy winner will overcome questions about his character and work ethic to become the first franchise quarterback in team history.

A year after going 2-14 with the NFL's worst offense, the Panthers on Thursday night bypassed safer selections such as Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson for Newton, who dazzled in his o

s. Who knows what's going to happen?''

The NFL draft always is a guessing game, but never before has it been accompanied by so much uncertainty.

Not just who will go first overall - the betting favorite is Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton to the Carolina Panthers - but who goes where and when beyond that.

And this year, the selection process has the added element of labor strife - a lockout stopped by a federal judge earlier this week. Should the league be forced to reopen for business before or during the
