CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -The Carolina Panthers are 0-2 when Steve Smith doesn't play, 2-0 when he does. The All-Pro receiver is healthy for the third straight week and Cleveland's cornerbacks are not, troubling news for the Browns as they travel to Carolina on Sunday. ``Whether the secondary is banged up or not, he still presents those same problems because he's going to catch the ball,'' Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. ``He's going to run very well after the catch, so you're going to have to cover him. The fourth-year pro was given an IV, returned from the locker room and led a go-ahead field goal drive before watching Tampa Bay let the lead slip away in the closing minutes of a 26-24 loss to the Carolina Panthers. It's uncertain which play Simms was hurt on, though Panthers defensive end Al Wallace was fined $7,500 for a fourth-quarter hit that Bucs coach Jon Gruden thought might have been the most damaging. Simms said his problems began in the first qua |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Carolina Panthers tight end Mike Seidman has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and will likely miss the rest of the season. Seidman, who had been starting, injured his knee in the win over Tampa Bay on Sept. 24, but coach John Fox claimed they didn't know it was a torn ACL until ``the last couple of days.'' Seidman is not yet on injured reserve. ``There are different options and we're sorting those out,'' Fox said Wednesday. Kris Mangum and Michael Gaines are ex |

| Panthers' Hartwig knows about Haynesworth's temper |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Justin Hartwig saw the replay of Albert Haynesworth kicking a player in the head and wasn't surprised. For good reason: The Carolina Panthers' center was a victim of Haynesworth's temper three years ago. The Tennessee Titans defensive tackle was suspended five games - the longest suspension for an on-field incident in NFL history - for twice stomping on the head of Dallas center Andre Gurode on Sunday Gurode, who lost his helmet, required 30 stitches to repair gashes on his face.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Ken Lucas came to the Carolina Panthers as a flashy free-agent addition, hailed as the cog in a shaky secondary. Four games into the second year of a six-year contract, Lucas now finds himself the most expensive backup cornerback in the NFL. Just how long the $36 million man stays on the bench remains to be seen. Lucas was surprisingly benched before the start of Sunday's win over New Orleans, with coach John Fox starting rookie Richard Marshall ahead of him. Fox chalked the lineup c |

| GOLDBERG ON FOOTBALL: Chicago is proving its worth 4 weeks into the NFL season |
NFL Football |

Last January, the Carolina Panthers proved to many skeptics what we had thought all along: The Chicago Bears' 11-5 season was largely the result of playing in the NFC North, where the resistance was token at best. On Sunday night, the Bears proved the opposite by manhandling Seattle, a Super Bowl team. With a caveat, make Chicago the best team in the NFL four weeks into the 2006 season. Normally, that would mean little - injuries and other tricks of fate can trip up anyone. But (see above) a weak divisi |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Before taking the head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints, Sean Payton called an old friend for advice. On Sunday, Payton's buddy will be on the other sideline when the Saints face John Fox's Carolina Panthers in an important NFC South game. There were no phone calls this week. ``It's hard during the season to ask for advice. The irony is that he's in the same division,'' Payton said. ``He's someone I would still talk with quite a bit, especially in the offseason or at those |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -DeAngelo Williams has learned there's a big difference between college football and the NFL. The Carolina Panthers' rookie running back has gone from getting no carries in the season opener, to rushing for 74 yards in Week 2, to finishing with minus-1 yard on four carries in last Sunday's win over Tampa Bay. The up-and-down numbers have showed Williams - the NCAA's career leader with 7,573 all-purpose yards - that he can't run wild like he did at Memphis. ``You have to speed up you |

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -Matt Hasselbeck wanted no part of it. Why would any quarterback want to face the NFL's stingiest defense? It shouldn't come as a surprise, then, that he shed no tears when the Carolina Panthers knocked the Chicago Bears out of the playoffs last season. A week later, Hasselbeck really had reason to celebrate when the Seattle Seahawks beat the Panthers for the NFC championship. ``I was not rooting for that matchup,'' Hasselbeck said. ``They're a great defense. CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -They're 3-0, coming off an emotional win in their return to New Orleans and heading on the road after a short week. Everything points to a letdown for the Saints as they travel to face the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. ``For us, it's coming down off the high,'' quarterback Drew Brees said. To say the least. In a triumphant return to New Orleans for the first time since the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the Saints dazzled the sellout crowd at the rebuilt Superdome on Monday nig |
