CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Carolina Panthers rookie running back DeAngelo Williams left Sunday's game against Cleveland after injuring his right ankle on a first-half carry. Williams, a first-round draft pick, was hurt when he went down in a pile on a 4-yard gain with about five minutes left in the second quarter. He had to be helped to the sideline while putting little weight on the leg, then was carted to the locker room after being examined behind the bench. His return was questionable. Copyright © |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -The Carolina Panthers are 0-2 when Steve Smith doesn't play, 2-0 when he does. The All-Pro receiver is healthy for the third straight week and Cleveland's cornerbacks are not, troubling news for the Browns as they travel to Carolina on Sunday. ``Whether the secondary is banged up or not, he still presents those same problems because he's going to catch the ball,'' Browns coach Romeo Crennel said. ``He's going to run very well after the catch, so you're going to have to cover him. | (MySportsbook) - Slowly but surely, the Carolina Panthers are rebuilding their reputation. A team that most expected to be among the foremost contenders for the NFC's entry in Super Bowl XLI was branded a fraud after their first two weeks, which saw the Panthers drop successive contests to the Falcons and Vikings, and look generally poor in doing so. Then, All-Pro wideout Steve Smith returned, sparking Carolina to victories over the Buccaneers and Saints, and all of a sudden, the Panthers are looking like the |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -They lumber on and off the field, one 300-pound defensive lineman replacing another as part of the Carolina Panthers' seven-man rotation. The line is best known for former Pro Bowl selections Julius Peppers and Kris Jenkins, but its depth is keeping opposing team's offensive linemen gasping for air. ``You look around the league and I don't see guys rotating as effectively as we do,'' said defensive end Al Wallace, who spells Peppers and Mike Rucker. ``When you can rotate quality guys |

| >Among players turned owners is former Baltimore Colts receiver Jerry Richardson, famous for investing his $3,500 check from the 1959 NFL playoffs to open the first Hardee's fast-food restaurant. He eventually earned enough to purchase the expansion Carolina Panthers in 1993, becoming the first NFL player to own a team since the Chicago Bears were owned by George Halas. Richardson didn't respond to requests for comment for this story. In 1999, Mario Lemieux became the first NHL player to own his former team |

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -Carolina Panthers safety Shaun Williams missed practice and was downgraded to doubtful for Sunday's game against Cleveland. Center Justin Hartwig was back on the field Friday and remained questionable on the injury report. Williams sat out the past two games with a right foot injury, but had practiced Wednesday and Thursday. ``He's not quite ready yet,'' coach John Fox said. Colin Branch is expected to again fill in for Williams at strong safety against the Browns. Hartwig, who |
