| what it was built for - big-time events. Unlike its relatively low-key dedication ceremony in 1975, Monday's coming-out party promises to be a star-studded, media-heavy event. On the field, it's a matchup of unbeaten archrivals, the Saints and the Atlanta Falcons. Off the field, it's an opportunity to exorcise some of the demons in the soul of a city that suffered through one of the nation's worst natural disasters. ``We know that the Superdome was symbolic of a lot of misery,'' Gov. Kathleen Blanco said. |

ATLANTA (AP) -Morten Andersen made the field goal that sent the Atlanta Falcons to their only Super Bowl in 1999. Now, as if repaying an old debt, the Falcons are giving Andersen a chance to become the leading scorer in NFL history. Never mind that only George Blanda was known to have been older when he played in the league. In desperate need of someone with an accurate leg, Atlanta signed the 46-year-old Andersen on Tuesday after Michael Koenen flopped badly in his attempt to handle all the team's kick |

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -Forty-six-year-old Morten Andersen became the second oldest NFL player in at least 30 years Tuesday, returning to the Atlanta Falcons after Michael Koenen flopped badly in his attempt to do all the team's kicking. Andersen, the league's second-leading career scorer, rejoins the league after last kicking with Minnesota in 2004. He will handle extra points and all field goal attempts - except those well beyond 50 yards. ``In my heart, I knew I could still play,'' Andersen said.

| o bounce back, come to work this week and be ready to go next week.'' Coach Jon Gruden is counting on it. Gruden reiterated Monday he isn't planning radical lineup changes in the wake of embarrassing performances against the Baltimore Ravens and Atlanta Falcons, who dominated Tampa Bay far more than Sunday's 14-3 score might suggest. The Bucs' highly regarded defense allowed 306 yards rushing against the Falcons, a franchise record. The offense gained 351 yards, up from 142 in a 27-0 season-opening loss |

| the talk of the town. And hundreds of fans lined the road leading from the airport when the team returned Sunday night from its 34-27 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The timing couldn't be better as the team gets ready to take on the archrival Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 25 in a Monday night matchup for the lead in the NFC South. It should be an emotion-filled evening as the Superdome is reopened more than a year after it was a centerpiece of the chaos that followed the hurricane's landfall in August 2005.< |

ATLANTA (AP) -Atlanta Falcons defensive end John Abraham was held out of Sunday's game against Tampa Bay with a groin injury after being listed as questionable on the team's injury report all week. Abraham suffered the injury in the fourth quarter of last week's 20-6 win at Carolina. Abraham had six tackles, two sacks, and two forced fumbles in the game. Chauncey Davis moved into the starting lineup at right end. Copyright © 2005 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. The information contai |

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Tampa Bay's Carnell ``Cadillac'' Williams returned to practice Friday and said he doesn't think back spasms will prevent him from playing against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. Last season's NFL offensive rookie of the year had a MRI exam early this week and was held out of practice Thursday. He said both were precautionary, and he doesn't anticipate the problem lingering. ``I feel pretty good, went through practice and had a pretty good workout,'' Williams said. ``If push came to shov |

ATLANTA (AP) -The Atlanta Falcons are off and running. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in need of a do-over. The NFC South rivals head into Sunday's game at the Georgia Dome coming off extremely disparate performances on opening day. Thumbs up for the Falcons, who went on the road to Carolina - a popular pick to win the NFC - and came away with a stunning 20-6 victory. It was a prototype for the style of game coach Jim Mora wants from his team, which ran for an NFL-high 252 yards and limited the Panthers t |

New Orleans' first home isn't until Sept. 25, a Monday night matchup with the Atlanta Falcons. Already, Saints jerseys or T-shirts with Bush's No. 25 are omnipresent in the metro area. Yet what impresses Bush most is the reception he has received from the locals. A particularly poignant moment for him came when he donated $50,000 to a Ca |

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) -The Atlanta Falcons had every reason to gloat after getting back at Carolina, dominating their division rival on the road after closing last season with a humiliating loss to the Panthers. But the mood at the Falcons' training complex was a bit subdued after two key members of the defense went down with injuries in the opener. Coach Jim Mora was tightlipped about the status of ends John Abraham and Patrick Kerney - with four Pro Bowls between them - heading into Sunday's game a |
