Cardinals coach hopes home field revs up 'inept' offense NFL Football 09/18/2006

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -The Arizona Cardinals are hoping their newfound home-field advantage can help them restart an offense coach Dennis Green labeled ``inept'' on Monday.

One week after Kurt Warner was voted NFC offensive player of the week in Arizona's season-opening victory over San Francisco, he was blamed, in part, by his coach for the offense's struggles in Sunday's 21-10 loss at Seattle.

In addition to throwing 38 times, the Cardinals fumbled five snaps and were sacked five times.

Opening game starter Macklin inactive for Cardinals NFL Football 09/17/2006

SEATTLE (AP) -The Arizona Cardinals made cornerback David Macklin inactive for their game at the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, one week after they benched him for ineffectiveness.

Macklin had started 32 of 33 games since he signed with Arizona in 2004. But the right cornerback dropped a possible interception on the third play of last week's 34-27 win over San Francisco, then missed a tackle on 31-yard touchdown run by Vernon Davis for the game's first score.

Branch will not make Seahawks debut Sunday NFL Football 09/16/2006

KIRKLAND, Wash. (AP) -Deion Branch will not make his Seattle Seahawks debut Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, after all.

The NFL has given the Seahawks a two-week roster exemption for the former Super Bowl MVP, acquired Monday from the New England Patriots in a trade that ended Branch's 45-day contract holdout. Seattle would have had to release a player from its 53-man roster by Saturday afternoon in order to add Branch for Sunday's game.

A Seahawks team spokesman confirmed they did not.

That means

James sees progress in Arizona's ground game NFL Football 09/14/2006

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) -Edgerrin James wasn't exactly boffo in his Arizona Cardinals debut, just good enough to believe the running game is moving ever-so-slowly in the right direction heading into Sunday's game at Seattle.

That wasn't the case early in Arizona's 34-27 victory over San Francisco.

James, the Cardinals' prize free agent signing, had 4 yards in his first eight carries. Slowly, though, the line began creating a few small creases for the big running back. He wound up with 73 yards in 26 carries.

nse for quarterback Alex Smith, who now has a much larger selection of playmakers than last season.

``We're going out there with a lot of belief in ourselves already,'' Smith said. ``It's very different than last year, and not just for me.''

The Arizona Cardinals beat San Francisco 34-27 last week, but Smith went 23-of-40 for 288 yards and a touchdown pass to rookie tight end Vernon Davis. Second-year running back Frank Gore also had a strong game, but the Niners' running game could suffer this week without

tarts out playing the way they want to be.''

A year later, Smith is getting there. He went 23-of-40 for 288 yards and one touchdown pass - the same number he had in nine appearances last season - in San Francisco's season-opening 34-27 loss at the Arizona Cardinals' new stadium last week. It came down to an end-zone heave on the final play.

Perhaps league observers will soon forget Smith's 11 interceptions, 11 fumbles and that single touchdown pass last season. Everybody seemed to find a vicious way to compa

The Arizona Cardinals must be making progress. Their coach complained Monday about a victory.

``I'm concerned about the whole team right now,'' Dennis Green said one day after the Cardinals opened their new stadium with a 34-27 victory over San Francisco. ``I just didn

Allen leaves game with sprained knee NFL Football 09/10/2006

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -San Francisco guard Larry Allen left Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals with a sprained knee during the 49ers' first possession.

Allen, a 10-time Pro Bowl selection in 12 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, signed a two-year free agent contract with San Francisco in March.

He was injured when he wound up at the bottom of a pile of players with 12:02 to play.

San Francisco lost a second offensive line, tackle Jonas Jennings, with a right ankle injury in the final seconds of th
